the refid is the source that that server is getting it's time sync from. It could be another server, or in the case of a stratum 1 server, it will be what external source is keeping it ticking. In the case of bigben it's a GPS receiver (I'm looking at getting one for home btw, if anyone knows one cheaper than a Garmin GPS35OEM, then email me privatly) In the case of the ones that I sync to in Aus, they are all atomic clocks. If you liked the ntpq command - then you might like it's cousin the ntpdc command.
