Definitely. Ethernet in particular, but cellphones too, have changed beyond all recognition. Bob Metcalfe's Ethernet ran at 3 Mbps, over a single thick co-axial cable, with shared access via CSMA/CD, Carrier Sense, Multiple Access with Collision Detection, with Manchester encoding to run the same bits per second as the fundamental frequency. Apart from backward compatibility, pretty much none of the hardware features of Metcalfe's Ethernet exist in modern full-duplex, twisted pair and fibre networks. The only remaining feature is the MAC header, and even then the way that is used as been extended well beyond that originally envisaged. -- don On 06/04/13 23:18, Richard Naylor wrote:
According to some media the cell phone turns 40 this month. EE Times has some articles on it or Google Marty Cooper.
22 May is the 40th for Ethernet - when Robert Metcalf wrote his memo outlining ethernet to his Boss.
Both sound like good reasons for more beer.
