Even with the paid download service it's still a once-a-month update.� Their webservice used to be the same, although it's possible that it's changed.� Updates are done within the first few days of the month, so updates can take anywhere between a day and a month to occur depending on when you submit them.

Maxmind do seem to be the largest source, Google and Google analytics use them as well.

Google primarily use Quova, along with their own internal data. I think they may use Maxmind for Google Analytics though.
