You just need to test continuity, so an AA cell, some wire and a torch bulb will do. Plus duct tape of course. If you can't find a bulb then your tongue would do. For the really adventurous you don't even need a battery---just get someone to ring you :-)
BTW, I seem to recall than the ringing voltage was chosen to be sub-lethal. Unfortunately there are counterexamples. You might really want to find that light bulb.
I've had some nasty frights getting 48V DC through the line when wiriing up the old house.
