cisco AS5200 with V.90 modems...
We are considering upgrading the modem firmware in our cisco AS5200 to support V.90 connections. Anyone had any bad experiences with the combination? Russell --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
Mica modems with 2.7.1.0 firware and 113.9 oos work well, Microcom modems are so bad they are unusable on v90. Give me a call and I'll give you all the details. ... Microcom vs MICA ...
Yes they are MICA modems. Somewhere in the dim dark past we had Microcoms, but were upgraded in preperation for K56flex and whatever the standard turned into. From memory our AS5200 was ordered 56k capable and so it was a zero-cost upgrade if it happened before a cut off date.

Hmmmm... In the release notes for the 2.7.1.0 firmware it says: Note Cisco MICA Portware Version 2.7.1.0 is not backward compatible. You must be running V.110 and Cisco IOS 12.0(4)XI1, 12.0(5)T, or higher to use Cisco MICA version 2.7.1.0. If you are using an earlier Cisco IOS release or are using V.90 or V.34, refer to Release Notes for Cisco MICA Portware Version 2.6.2.0 on Cisco AS5X00s. Any ideas what gives there? Use IOS c5200-i-l.113-9.T.bin, and modem firmware 2.7.1.0 and you should not have a problem. I still testing ios 12.0. -----Original Message----- From: Russell Street [mailto:russells(a)auckland.ac.nz] Sent: Thursday, 23 September 1999 13:58 To: tonyw(a)iconz.co.nz Cc: russells(a)auckland.ac.nz; nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: Re: cisco AS5200 with V.90 modems...

We've had bad experiences with AS5200's and just making them work reliably. We are trying to get rid of the few that are left in Sydney. Really? I used to get over 6 months uptime on these units no trouble at all, but I never went past firmware 3.3(20) because the v.90 stuff (i.e. 5+) breaks horribly... -cw -- Chris Wedgwood chris.wedgwood(a)clear.co.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Does that mean you spend all day doing nothing? Or do you enjoy pain? :)

Modem compatibility is a moving target - even if you have the latest and greatest on your NAS, it's very likely the V.90 client code in even shiny new modems people are buying today may be even a year (or more) old. Because the NAS' end is wholy digital, its perception of line quality (including critical measures like "eye" quality) will always be better than what the client sees. It's the client that will make the majority of decisions as to what speed is best, when to reneg or retrain, etc. Of course, you have only limited control over the clients. Unfortunately the only real way you will be able to tell, for any given environment, is try it and see in a small scale, controlled trail. No vendor can provide you with the proverbial rock-solid gaurantee that a wildly hetreogenous populution of clients from many different manufacturers, firmware versions, etc will respond well to a given implementation. -- Josh Bailey (mailto:joshbailey(a)lucent.com) lucent->ins->software->alameda[CA] /* 1601 Harbor Bay Parkway, Alameda, CA 94502 (room 1601/1108C) voice: +1-510-747-3367 skytel: 1-800-skytel2/mailto:1198428(a)skytel.com */ --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Yes Dean, we know. Neither have we, except that Chris is the only person who knows how to drive them, that is. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. mica or microcom? If the latter, I would say "run away, run away!" mostly because I still have tickets open after a year because of v.90 imcompatabilites with the microcom modems and certain v.34 modems. mica, on the other hand, although starting out very poorly, now seems pretty good -- although I really only have expeience with this on 240 port 5300s (ie. IOS 12.0.x), not 5200s, but I don't think that will matter much... -cw -- Chris Wedgwood chris.wedgwood(a)clear.co.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
Well, I know Cisco is not going to like me after this, but they never did say to keep it quiet. Cisco replaced all my 5200 Microcom modems with Micas ( at their cost ) due to the hugh problems with modem compatability. -----Original Message----- From: owner-nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:owner-nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz]On Behalf Of Chris Wedgwood Sent: Thursday, 23 September 1999 11:51 To: Russell Street Cc: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: Re: cisco AS5200 with V.90 modems...
