Re: [nznog] Anyone know why power is down?
I know at least one of those major players doesn't use satellite out of Dunedin, and they use BCL for their backup already. I think you'll find there is two ways out, at best. -----Original Message----- From: Drew Whittle [mailto:drew(a)earthlight.co.nz] Sent: Monday, 12 June 2006 9:46 a.m. To: tony(a)prophecy.net.nz Cc: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: Re: [nznog] Anyone know why power is down? haha... you do know what a thin and venerable set of fibers connects Dunedin to the rest of the country then ?
There are at least 4 ways out of Dunedin that I can think of: Satellite, Telecom,TelstraClear, BCL.

Pardon?? Are you trying to say that there are only two paths out of Dunedin? I'm not talking about what "Major" Players are using, I'm stating that there are at least 4 paths out of Dunedin. I don't care what Major players are using. Drew
yeh lets not forget the runners and homing pigeons ;)
Telecom has extensivly upgraded its fibre blanket since the last major, and
there's still microwave.

He's right. One of the three has all but given up their own infrastructure and uses BCL instead. Rats love fibre... So from that your saying that either Telecom or TelstraClear no longer run their own fibre up Country? Thats news to me, and of course which one??

Yep. Well, when you think about which two shared the cost of burying the fibre. BCL's network is a very nice ring in itself, with more redundancy than you see almost anywhere (assuming nobody attacks their towers). Dunedin is still probably pretty reliably connected, so long as you do of course buy from both providers. _______________________________________________ NZNOG mailing list NZNOG(a)list.waikato.ac.nz http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/nznog -- No virus found in this incoming message.
