Hi, If there are any Ihug Mail Admins floating around on the list would you be so good as to put your hand up? One of your customers is sending out thousands of promo newsletters with several images attached. It has been running since Friday and a number of our clients are already facing several hundred dollar excess usage charges from our good friends at Telecom from downloading it all. They have stupidly put the addresses in the CC field, and I believe the problem may be that some of the CC field recipients are running MS Exchange 2000. There is a bug if it is configured for open relaying which resends emails to the list of addresses if there are more than a certain number. I recall having this issue a year or two ago, but Im a bit hazy on the details, and Im not a mail guru myself. The KB seems to be taking this convenient moment to throw an error when I try to search it. If I recall correctly, SP3 for Exchange 2000 fixed the problem, so with any luck there would only be only server in the recipient list with the problem and we can stamp it out. If anyone recalls this Exchange issue, Id appreciate a steer too. Some time ago I encountered this and wrote the following article: http://www.blakjak.net/node/125 Problem 1) People running buggy pop3-connectors for MS Exchange Problem 2) People usin Open CC for large multiple-recipient email. Because of the fact that the problem could be avoided if the client were running patched/current mail systems - or simply by running a decent SMTP type mail system instead of pop multidrop - I only have a limited amount of sympathy for the clients. However, failure to use blind CC delivery for promotional material / newsletters etc is obviously verrrrry poor netiquette on the part ofthe sender. But, side effect of all this, an Ihug Mail Admin is not necessarily going to be able to solve this. Fixes: 1) People need to patch their damn mail systems otherwise not run buggy platforms in the first place. It could be said that even running this software is potentially in breach of service providers T&C as theyre causing their own DoS... ! 2) Source of original message needs to be given a fairly sharp education in good netiquette... Good luck. Mark. On Sun, 21 May 2006, Erin Salmon - Unleash wrote:

It's going to get worse before it gets better. If it ever gets better, that is. Welcome to sharing the internet with the rest of the world. I try to get my clients to use actual mailing list scripts and I've only had one send out actual spam. It made my day to cut him off. Policing your users is just part of the job I guess. *Justin Cook* Developer http://www.skull.co.nz/ *Skype* justincookskull skype:justincookskull?call My status skype:justincookskull?call Mark Foster wrote:

Some time ago I encountered this and wrote the following article: http://www.blakjak.net/node/125 In the absence of the KB, I'll have a read. Thanks. Yes, I think the problem is the receiver's server perpetuating the mail. Ihug shutting down the offending sender wouldn't fix it in this case, but it's the simplest one to rule out.
