VUW router's change log says the Kawaihiko DDS links were added on 14 Jun 90; the PC-router links running before that. This was before I started there; Mark Davies or Michael Newbery may have more info.
Jonathan, Andy and I put the PC-router links in in late '89. They were running SLIP over the the DSIR's terminal network (with Tony van der Peet, then at DSIR, making the required changes to their precursors of the ACE boxes to allow for permanent links). The initial link was between Waikato and here followed up by a similar link between here and Massey. We ran a slightly modified version of SLIP to deal with the non 8bit clean nature of the lines and they ran at the glorious speed of 4.8K. cheers mark --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

That sounds about right. The 3 of you helped Roger Brockie set up a similar PC Router link to WCC in November 89. We had the luxury of a 9k6 DDS line (to replace the old 2400bps uucp link). My memory has it that the Ames link went in around August 89 but John Houlker can probably remember better. Which is why I was a little surprised no one in ISOCNZ ran a special "10 years of the Internet in NZ". Seems 1999 was a bit of a milestone. rich richard.naylor(a)citylink.co.nz This mail message contains information that is confidential and which may be subject to legal privilege. Probably too worried about law suits and being called names. I was gonna write that ISOCNZ preferred to look at the future rather than the past, but figured the howls of derision weren't worth it. 8-) -- don --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

My notes on this say the 9600 bps analog link to Hawaii started operation in April 89 - that was the start of Kawaihiko's IP network.
