2007 Conference Videos
Video of talks from the 2007 NZNOG Conference is now available at http://www.r2.co.nz/20070131/ Sorry for the delay. The talks were shot to tape, which need to be captured, edited, transcoded and finally a big web page to cover it all. Theres 30 videos covering over 24 hours (something like 20 GB of server space). I have decided that its the video you all want, so haven't made any MP3s this time. Beat me up if you want MP3s. The video is available for both streaming (2 formats) and download (1 format). Theres a flash player and windows player option. And if you ever wondered if you can have 30 embedded players in a web page - the answer is yes - they all work at the same time. If your network and CPU can handle it. Don't watch them all at once..... and let me know if you find any issues. I haven't watched them all the way thru. We just processed them. A big thanks to James at InspireNet who paid for the video guys (not R2) who shot it with some nice cameras. Richard

Thats compressed footage. The capture used roughly 400GB (15 GB per hour for 24 hours) The edited footage used another 400GB (sometimes several versions were made) And the various stages and versions of compression used 200 GB. A 1TB disk was used for the project and was just enough. Good thing they're affordable now. It was an interesting exercise in large scale transcoding. We used 4 quad-cores as a render wall. The transcode process took all of one week end - friday night to sunday night....or was it monday....it keeps the house warm. Our LAN server and LAN maxed out at 100mbps. must look for some cheap gig switches. We uploaded the footage (20GB) to the host server using sneaker net. (the server was at home for a rebuild) Recession aside, its a fairly typical working week. R

Hopefully more than one disk was used so it's backed up/archived ? ;) I've got a few old 80's mix tapes lying around if you need backup media... - Drew

Ta - theres over 30TB of disk here and it grows every month. It is backed up. The live servers are replicated in two different buildings, both with UPS and generator and different ISPs. Two other copies are held nearby on other servers (not publicly visible). Disks are just another media to us, like tape stock, so we buy regularly, including backup disks. I'm trying to avoid buying more tape, but its a very good security record when shooting live.
When do the registrations start? The web says early December which is around now. Cheers Wayne

The Super Shuttle is a local franchise operation and doesn't go AKL -> Hamilton (or vice versa) unless you pay the charter rate (quoted in September as $335 one way). That might work if you can fill the shuttle... They were very helpful when I asked, though, and suggested I contact either RoadCat or Bay of Plenty Shuttles instead. There will be hostel accommodation available to be booked through the conference. We are hoping to suggest a single venue close to the Uni for those who would prefer a hotel - it would be great if we can keep it to two accommodation venues as it's more fun that way :^) We have a short list, but any local knowledge suggestions would be appreciated - off-list please. This year wasn't typical of past NZNOGs.... The accommodation available through the booking system will be in the University Halls of Residence. It is on campus, so an easy walk to the conference venue, cheap ($66), includes breakfast and will have Internet access provided by Rural Link as part of their sponsorship. As a local, I have never stayed there, or even been inside them, but I understand it is good basic, but not luxurious accommodation. Many other long time NZNOG people will be able to give you a review from '04 and '05. There is nothing else* in easy walking distance of the venue. There are a couple of motels in Hamilton East but you would still have to get a ride to the conference venue and into town should you want to visit any of the many bars or restaurants in the central area. The alternative recommendation is therefore the Ibis in town. Again, I have never stayed or even been in it, but it has been strongly recommended to me as a nice place that isn't too expensive. It is in the central city and handy to all sorts of late night establishments. It is at: http://www.ibishotel.com/gb/hotel-6690-ibis-hamilton-tainui/index.shtml We don't have any arrangements for Internet access. For reference, the conference dinner is planned to be on campus, but there is no on-campus curry house. *If you search google maps you may come across a place called the Hillcrest Lodge Hotel which is quite close to the University. Currently though it is a building site and their phone is cut off so don't plan on staying there. Richard.

Only comment I'd add is that it's not (or wasn't then) aircon'd, which resulted in several of us purchasing small cheap fans to make the stay bearable; with only a single window there was no natural airflow and it got quite stifling without a fan. -- Regards, Ed Hintz ed(a)hintz.org
Still no aircon. Yeah, there a thin line between nice weather and too hot. Richard. On 18/12/09 3:36 PM, Edmund A. Hintz wrote:

As it happens I stayed at that Ibis when it was brand new and they had an introductory cheap deal on. It was perfectly fine, and very familiar to anyone who's ever stayed in an Ibis elsewhere (I often used to stay in an Ibis in Brussels when involved in some EU stuff years ago). It's handy for bars and restaurants; in fact we ate mussels at the Belgian Cafe, which made it even more like being in Brussels. Brian
For people who wish to have aircon and want to book accomodation at the Ibis, do you know of any pre-arranged discount, or reserved rooms in the name of nznog, or anything like that ?

Like everyone else says go with the Bluebird... (PacBlue). When going back out, Hamilton Airport is way batter than Auckland for Check out, etc. So Pacific Blue is definitely the way to go. There is the Novaltel and Ibis on Victoria Street as an option. Or you could pitch a tent on my back lawn (if you don't object to an elderly dog), or the front lawn if you wish (subject to my wife's approval). (I suppose you want WiFi broadband too.) Ooooohh... a Novotel Hamilton Tainui – and cheap too. What is Quest on Ward? Nathan... you have a Quest on you? Can I stay in you? ;-) There seems to be quite a few hotels in downtown Hamilton, and it is like only 1.5km to the uni.. not that I’d walk it. I’m a little too old and entitled these days to stay in Uni accommodation ;-) ...Skeeve -- Skeeve Stevens, CEO/Technical Director eintellego Pty Ltd - The Networking Specialists skeeve(a)eintellego.net / www.eintellego.net Phone: 1300 753 383, Fax: (+612) 8572 9954 Cell +61 (0)414 753 383 / skype://skeeve www.linkedin.com/in/skeeve ; facebook.com/eintellego -- NOC, NOC, who's there? It's OK, especially if you like the sound of farm boys in their V8s drag racing all night. It's not that bad really, and maybe the cops have cracked down on the racing in the past few years. There are (or were) three Thai restaurants nearby and the river is picturesque. Cheers, Lloyd
