Crimes Amendment Act #6
Does any one know where I can get a copy of the Crimes Amendment Act #6 I need to know what the story is about sending bulk e-mail from the server as I have a client wanting to do so however need to know how they can legally do it. (ie by placing opt out at the bottom is that sufficient) also is e-mail covered under this act as an offence. Thanks in advance.

Check out www.legislation.govt.nz perhaps? Also, refer to: www.spamhaus.org for hints and tips on how to do bulk-email the right way. For a story on how not to do it, read: http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/UNID/0E06500CE457FA8FCC256F0A0012BD13 HTH, -- Juha

From what I have read of it, no it doesnt cover this. If the list isnt opt-in, what you will find happen though, is that your network suddenly cant talk to others in New Zealand and throughout the world, as people start blocking you for being scum. If the list is opt-in go for your life... If it isnt... then no number of opt-out signatures will save you.

And even if it is opt-in, make sure there are opt-out links at the bottom of the message. But, as Jeremy says, don't touch opt-out lists for anything less than several months' worth of usual income - Because you will lose money when you start getting black listed. The safest lists are double opt-in. Single opt-in has risks, since people can be maliciously signed up.

Don't forget to ask your hosting service as well what their bulk email and spam policies are. -- Juha
