We are having some major issues over the past week when forwarding mail to xtra. Mainly:
- delivery temporarily suspended: connect to mta.xtra.co.nz - connect to mta.xtra.co.nz[210.54.141.1]: server dropped connection without sending the initial SMTP greeting
Has anyone seen any of these issues and knows anything about them?
I've been seeing similar issues, such as 2006-12-07 14:13:36 1Gs4Fp-0000gi-Vv SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection: host mta.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1]: 421 Service not available 2006-12-07 14:13:36 1Gs4Fq-0000hO-Ut mta.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] Connection refused 2006-12-07 12:03:52 1Gs4YH-0002YT-Qz mx1.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] Connection reset by peer 2006-12-07 12:34:26 1Gs4Ll-00049D-Hg Remote host mx1.xtra.co.nz [210.54.141.1] closed connection in response to initial connection same issues, mail isn't getting delivered until a force mail queue run is done, clients are moaning...as usual :( tom

This is exactly what I am seeing also. I think this is affecting so many folks now that it's about time Ted or someone else from Xtra explained what's going on. --- James Tyson "Art -- is part of...who we are. It's part of...being human, Spock." http://helicopter.geek.nz/

Since 0630 this morning my MTA has logged 142 failed connection attempts similar to this: Dec 9 12:44:00 maverick qmail: 1165621440.510720 delivery 6790: deferral: Connected_to_210.54.141.1_but_connection_died._(#4.4.2)/ In comparison, I have logged 18 successful deliveries. By my calculations that means that Xtra are deferring more than 85% of inbound mail connections. However, to their credit, their "MOTD" such as it is @ http://xtra.co.nz/help was updated very shortly after James's post - so at least theyre acknowledging the issue. That said, walking back through my logs over the last week, that error has been popping up very often.... I walked back through my mail logs and the first occurrance was around 0210hrs on November 27th. Two weeks?

Why is it when it was happening to IHUG the Media / general public were over them like a rash, but when its telecom people seem to take it. Arr.. god bless the Telecommunications Amendment Act that was passed.. /me returns to lurking......................

Perhaps it's because people have acquired the habit of not using their ISPs for e-mail, and are instead using gmail/hotmail/yahoo/ whatever. I struggle to think of any of my non-technical friends or relatives that use IMAP or POP for mail with their ISP's servers, for example. Most of them seem to use Yahoo! through a browser. (Come to think of it, none of my technical friends use their ISP's mail servers either. They either run their own, or they use mine :-) In that context, an inability to exchange packets with the rest of the world is a far more serious problem than even a long-standing problem with an ISP's mail platform. There may be some element of customers being resigned to a "best-effort" service, but I see that Auntie Hairoiled picked up on the story: http://subs.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.cfm?c_id=239&objectid=10415122 -- Juha Saarinen www.geekzone.co.nz/juha | Skype: juha_saarinen blogs.pcworld.co.nz/pcworld/techsploder www.computerworld.co.nz | MSN: juha_saarinen(a)msn.com Voice: +64 9 950 3023 Subtle recursive jokes in .sigs are not funny.
