the refid is the source that that server is getting it's time sync from. It could be another server, or in the case of a stratum 1 server, it will be what external source is keeping it ticking. In the case of bigben it's a GPS receiver (I'm looking at getting one for home btw, if anyone knows one cheaper than a Garmin GPS35OEM, then email me privatly) In the case of the ones that I sync to in Aus, they are all atomic clocks. If you liked the ntpq command - then you might like it's cousin the ntpdc command. Interesting discussion, however the official list of Public NTP Secondary (stratum 2) Time Servers is at: http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2.htm There are a bunch listed for New Zealand including the official name you should use for waikato. -- Simon Lyall. | Newsmaster | Work: simon.lyall(a)ihug.co.nz Senior Network/System Admin | Postmaster | Home: simon(a)darkmere.gen.nz ihug, Auckland, NZ | Asst Doorman | Web: http://www.darkmere.gen.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Which I guess means it isn't an offical public server. I seem to remember asking someone at clear a year or two ago if it was okay to use. Officially you should only be listening to a stratum 1 server if you are are running a strat 2 server that is serving a large number of other servers. Take a look at www.ntp.org for more info. Basicly you shouldn't listen to any server unless it's publicly listed, which means for your home machine (or small business) you should use one of the public stratum 2 servers that are listed at the URL I gave. Timemaster for ihug is one of my jobs, it's good for about 8 hours each year. -- Simon Lyall. | Newsmaster | Work: simon.lyall(a)ihug.co.nz Senior Network/System Admin | Postmaster | Home: simon(a)darkmere.gen.nz ihug, Auckland, NZ | Asst Doorman | Web: http://www.darkmere.gen.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

I think you mean "it's rude to listen to a server unless the server operator says its ok". The server operator said it was ok. There is no official list of time servers. Well... the Web site Simon referred me to says it's because the load on the stratum 1 servers is high, so therefore it's considerate and kind to use a stratum 2 server instead.
