Given that APNIC are now assigning 4-byte AS numbers by default, I wondered what the state of play was among members of this list. You can still get 2-byte AS numbers: "Two-byte AS numbers will only be assigned if the applicant can demonstrate that a four-byte only AS number is unsuitable." but come January 2010 numbers will be assigned without distinction. Is anyone out there ready for this?
We (Snap) can handle 4 byte AS numbers. Although none of our customers have any yet. We're three routers away from having every system compatible with 4-byte ASN. Three routers and three(ish) weeks, cross fingers :) -Michael On Tue, 2009-07-07 at 09:06 +1200, Andy Linton wrote:

I'm seeing some routing oddities with one client that has been assigned a 2-byte ASN, but it seems all the issues are upstream. It seems that not everyone is ready. I think we need to send some folks a good supply of beer to make sure they upgrade their software. -- Andrew Ruthven Wellington, New Zealand At home: andrew(a)etc.gen.nz | linux.conf.au 2010 | Follow the signs. Do you mean 4 byte?

Well, it should be backwards compatible for the most part. An AS with a 4-byte will need full support on all their kit, but they should be able to interconnect with peers without any problems. The non-4-byte AS sees it as AS23456. -- Nathan Ward

and how many AS23456 peers are you willing/able to talk to at any given time? --bill

Err, yes. And I haven't even had a beer. Oh dear.

Ah, theory. Everything works perfectly in theory. ;) -- Andrew Ruthven Wellington, New Zealand At home: andrew(a)etc.gen.nz | linux.conf.au 2010 | Follow the signs. Visit Wellington! | http://www.lca2010.org.nz

I'd be interested to see where it doesn't in practice, I haven't heard of anything so far, apart from the thing you're talking about... do you have any details about that? I would imagine it's just user error somewhere.. -- Nathan Ward

Hi, I have done a few asn32 talks, if someone wants to present them at a local NOG then we can update them together and they can present. http://www.andyd.net/index.php/talks/ Thanks Andy
