I just had a look at my domain of darkmere.gen.nz on the new domainz site of www.domainz.glazier.co.nz. The problem seems to be that the Holder Phone number seems to have been truncated in the change. On the old site at: http://domainz.waikato.ac.nz/cgi-bin/DNZ-REGISTER?domain_name=darkmere.gen.n... It is: Holder Phone: +64 9 358 5067 ex 9701 but on the new site ( http://www.domainz.glazier.co.nz/ , then "Domain Name Management" , then "Domain Name Search" ) It is: Phone: 64 9 358 5067 ext 97 Note, the "+64" has been changed to just 64 and the extention on 9701 has been changed to 97. I guess somebody didn't think when they programed in that field. So, that's: + removal of billing contact fields + truncation of phone numbers + modification of "last-changed" fields on the list of changes made without authorisation; Domainz are also using a (reasonably) arbitrary algorithm to assign nameholders to "registrars", giving ISPs the ability to further modify nameholder records without nameholders' consent or approval. Excellent :) I understand this registry vandalism is forming the basis of at least one official compaint to IANA. ObOperationalContent: domains that have been incorrectly assigned to "registrars" can have the "registrar" field modified by sending a suitably-phrased request to 4service(a)domainz.net.nz. The domain I requested to be fixed yesterday was processed nice and rapidly. Actually, come to think of it, the change I requested was actioned without anybody asking me for written authorisation, and without including the domain key... I've just had a look at my domain 'lionra.net.nz' and even though I registered this myself it's assigned to Netlink as the registrar. Of course there seems to be no way for me to change this that's at all obvious as Joe has pointed out. --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
I get the same result for flatnet.gen.nz. katipo communications is my registrar. I can only guess that they have looked at where the domain is hosted and decided the registrar based on that. I'd be interested to know what being the `registrar' of a domain means. If it's just a title then cool. But Katipo Communication should be recieving no correspondence about my domain, nor should they have any control over it. Dean On Wed, May 10, 2000 at 04:44:32AM +0000, Andy Linton wrote:

I wouldn't worry about it dude, we haven't received any communication from Domainz about your domain, or the other 50 odd we host DNS for. Nor have we asked to be a registrar/agent, but that hasn't stopped Domainz making us one... If Katipo are the "registrar" for your domain, then they have the ability to change entries relating to your domain without your knowledge. They will also get notifications by e-mail when you make changes to your records, I think (although I could be wrong about that). The idea seems to be that Katpio should be prevented from making unauthorised changes by the agreement they sign with Domainz, which restricts their activities to the straight-and-narrow. But since no "registrar" has actually signed an agreement with Domainz to date, that's kind of acadamic, isn't it? It was suggested early in the testing of this new system that, at transition, every nameholder should be tagged with "registrar: domainz". Individual nameholders could then change registrars according to who they _wanted_ do do business with. They would also be given the opportunity to end the contract with the Domainz "registrar", and begin a new one with the new "registrar", and everything would be clear-cut and obvious. However, Domainz have obviously decided that it's more convenient to arbitrarily assign nameholders to "registrar"s without their permission. [I use the word "registrar" here in the sense of "Domainz billing agent" as opposed to any more conventional ICANN definition] As I mentioned yesterday, the operational procedure for correcting these mistakes is to send instructions to change the vandalised records to 4service(a)domainz.net.nz. I did this yesterday, and they allowed me to make my changes without the inconvenience of a written request, or a domain key. Want more? Here's another one. Domain names that belong to ihug (ihug.co.nz, ihug.net.nz, etc...) somehow have 'Accounts Department' has the name holder contact. However, in the letter that I received from Domainz (and also the old Waikato system, I am sure), I was listed as the name holder contact. Time to send another email to Domainz wanting an explanation. But what disturbs me more - as a name holder for my own domains - is that Domainz are yet to email me my login id and password. I wonder how many years I will be waiting for that? How hard would it have been to send out 50,000 automated emails on Monday morning? Too hard, I guess. -- simon On Wed, 10 May 2000, Andy Linton wrote:

Well, all the .nz domainz held by samizdat, including samizdat.co.nz have an UNALLOCATED registrar. Wierd.

I believe you are assigned the unallocated registrar if you have less than x domain names on your nameserver (which is what Domainz use to determine a registrar with the changeover). Both of my personal domain names were given the registrar of 'Unallocated'. You will be listed as 'Unallocated-2' if your nameservers are nsX.2day.com :-) -- simon On Thu, 11 May 2000, James Tyson wrote:

What concerns me is the fact that with all these domains with incorrect registrar's, where are these logins and passwords going to go? Does the domain owner get them? Does the registrar get them? Does a person chosen purely at random get them?
