Anybody got anything to say about this? Peter Mott Chief Enthusiast 2day.com -/-
***************************************************************** This message is being sent to 70 ISP's in New Zealand It's a request for your company to change it's Root Server setup. *****************************************************************
To whom it may concern,
The Wapterix Internet Group is in the process of setting up it's online presence.
We are looking to offer a number of online services including hosting, domain registration and web design to name a view. One area we will not be entering into is that of an ISP. We feel that there is already a good selection and number of ISP's operating in New Zealand and for us to enter into this sort of service would dilute our energies from the provision of services that will be profitable for us.
The reason for our contacting you is that we have a number of domains relevant to our business operation that have been registered under the ".z" domain extension. As this extension is an alternative extension, and not recognised by the A-Root Server, we are writing to ask that you adjust your name servers and resolvers to allow New Zealand internet users access to this extension.
The extension is controlled by ADNS.net through their site, www.adns.net, where you will be able to find information on how, as an ISP, you can change your servers so that domains under this extension are visible to the internet users of New Zealand.
ADNS use the ORSC Root Server (www.open-rsc.org) rather than the A Root Server given that they are an alternative extension. This Root Server has a large number of internet users accessing it, and offers the added advantage that users, while being able to access alternative extensions covered by the ORSC Root Server, they can also access all generic extensions - .com, .net, .org, .co.nz - and so on.
We have chosen to operate domains under the ".z" extension in support of our belief that the internet should be not be controlled by one governing body, and that individuals should be free to choose any extension that suits their operation and/or operate their own extensions, provided those extensions do not legally interfere with the operation of extensions operated by other individuals or organisations. We hope you accept our view and will support us in our operation by changing your servers accordingly allowing us to operate our domains, and New Zealand internet users the ability to access our domains.
Should you have any querries please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be more than willing to answer any questions you may have.
Yours
Trevarr McCarthy President The Wapterix Internet Group

Let's assume this is a good idea and all the ISPs asked to make the change do so. Addresses for web sites in the .z domain start to circulate around NZ and find their way to corporates, government departments and agencies and other folk who run their own nameservers etc. I'd have to say I'd be surprised if they could resolve the .z names. So they pick up the phone and ring their ISP saying "the Internet is broken yet again, please fix it". ISP gets into help mode explaining to all sorts on non technical people how to patch their DNS servers. ISP also has to deal with all sorts of calls which are blamed on this change even though they're not - you know the sort - ever since you made us changed the DNS, my {mouse, photocopier, printer, sex life} stopped working. So I'd have to wonder if the problem set is slightly larger than 70 ISPs. Do you really need the .z domain so much that you're prepared to dick around with the "glue that binds" the net together? Isn't this mail from Wapterix simple spam that should be discarded? --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Just going back to an old thread for a minute... I just got an email from a user asking when ihug is going to be supporting the new.net domains. What I find a little disturbing, is that Earthlink and @Home are supporting this... (check the partners page). And only them! Monopolys are good! Just ask Domainz!

Hell yeah. Anyone want to sign up for a .matt.camp.is.my.god domain? Only $9.95 a month! Idealistic, but hardly practical. These people are also pushing .usa and .earth... Looks to me like they're just trying to make a buck, given that they're the only people you can register them via. --- Matt Camp --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Anybody got anything to say about this?
Yeah, I got something to say about it. Anyone who thinks alternate roots are a solution doesn't understand the problem or the DNS. It's self-serving garbage from someone with snake oil to sell. I really think everyone needs to get over the idea of alternate roots. They promise nothing but chaos and instability, just for the sake of creating business opportunities for a few individuals. -- don --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

It's spam. Treat it as such.

"..and, in return, we'll give you a cut of all the *.z registration fees." Oh, wait, no, it doesn't actually say that, does it?
We have chosen to operate domains under the ".z" extension in support of our belief that the internet should be not be controlled by one governing body,
"..that isn't us..."
and that individuals should be free to choose any extension that suits their operation and/or operate their own extensions, provided

We hope you accept our view and will support us in our operation by changing your servers accordingly allowing us to operate our domains, and New Zealand internet users the ability to access our domains.
"...In exchange for which, we'll give you a cut, as mentioned above." Oh, wait, no, again that's missing. If the guy wants to make a buck (which he clearly does) then he should cut in people on the profits, not appeal so some kind of sense of moral outrage at current control systems.
