Providers of high volume free content (such as the Citylink FTP server) are left in a somewhat difficult position -- either they do something like this (ie offer it on WIX for anyone who can reach WIX), or they somehow try to find enough money to pay for big enough links to reach everyone, or they just give up and don't offer anything at all. Given how popular ftp.citylink.co.nz probably is, and how much traffic that likely involves, I doubt that (after paying for all the mirroring costs, admin time, etc) Citylink's generosity can extend to paying for "domestic transit" links to all the people who might want to use it. Offering it free on WIX to anyone that can reach it seems like the next best thing to me. The "the content is here, come and get it" incentive is just an added bonus over the link cost savings. And I for one am pleased they chose to continue offering the FTP site even if access is not as NZ wide as it was before. Downloading at 2Mbps (Paradise cable) or 100Mbps (WIX) sure beats slower international downloads. Ewen

Well what about hosting a mirror in APE? If anyone could provide the space in Sky tower I have a spare box which could be used for an APE mirror and I don't mind maintaining it. Still getting the data from WIX to APE would incur a cost somewhere and seeing as my Orcon link also seems to route international, this isn't a possibility. I'm curious as to what data people are pulling off the Citylink ftp server, as part of the JSG realm I maintain a reasonable sized ftp server, that is realm and APE accessible. http://ftp1.games.xtra.co.nz/files/ if you want to have a look at what is already there. I am always open to suggestions to more mirroring oppurtunities, currently there is a debain, fedora, gentoo and currently obtaining a cAos mirror. There are also a large number of gaming related files/patches/demos/movies stored there as well. Replies off list if you feel it's necessary. -----Original Message----- From: Barry Murphy [mailto:barry(a)unix.co.nz] Sent: Wednesday, 30 June 2004 11:08 a.m. To: 'Juha Saarinen'; 'Ewen McNeill' Cc: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: RE: [nznog] Routing funky-ness to WIX via GGI? APE accessible, when, or if, Xtra feel they will peer, which is not neccessarily the case. aj. -- Network Operations || noc. +64.9.915.1825 Maxnet || cell. +64.21.639.706

How big is the box? If its smaller than the one I have, i maybe able to make
some room for it somewhere.. I dont mind hosting the machine, but dont have
time to maintain it..

I've asked the Same as well.. At the moment ftp.citylink.co.nz and ftp.nz.debian.org are the same IP address. What (I think) should happen is they move it (ftp.nz.debian.org) to another ip address and then advertise it separately on WIX and APE (anycast). So Citylink can continue to announce it at WIX and someone can take over at APE and advertise it there. I am pretty sure there are many people who would not mind looking after it at APE and using their own Bandwidth for updates. (as I see the problem/reason it started to only advertisement at WIX was that national bandwidth (from people not connected at WIX) was too much to offer this type of service) (offering something they get nothing from) Or get ftp.nz.debian.org to Akamai-type based system to ftp.nz.debian.org resolves to the closest mirror. Thanks Craig

To clarify, I don't blame Citylink for what they're doing. It's good financial management, since the alternative would probably be turning the box off completely. Choosing between cripped and non-existent, crippled is absolutely the better choice. I'm just pissed off that the big Ts have brought it to this at all. Had Telstra kept their Aussie practices over there, Telecom would probably have continued to play the game since they would've been the odd ones out. But when you have over half the country's consumer base tied up in two companies and they both want to stop peering, things get ugly.
