According to an aquaintance who's an Actrix customer, it's been down for a couple of hours (Actrix haven't just cut off Domainz, they've cut off everybody). Does raise in me the question of why the technical organisation in charge of our beloved .nz domain buys mail services, rather than running a public mail server for itself... I don't agree -- I see no reason why the professional services of an ISP who make it their business (or at least part of their business) to deliver mail should be any less reliable than Domainz having their own mail server, in fact, I would expect it to be more reliable if anything. -cw -- Chris Wedgwood chris.wedgwood(a)clear.co.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

James,
I'm curious to hear about your 'uptimes' complaint. I know the
Waikato systems have far exceeded the 99% (or there abouts) uptime
requirement that we are contractually required to deliver. I
can't speak for the Actrix end of things, but again, I have heard
very little complaints of an outage at their end (a few mail
glitches recently, but the I had believed the history to be
pretty good). Can you list real outages, or do you just have
issues with people taking Annual Leave?
Geoff.

Sorry, uptime was the wrong word. I was actually meaning to take a cheap shot at Domainz' procedures. James Tyson --- Samizdat New Media Solutions --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

99% -- is that all you are required to provide? As someone near me pointed out thats over 85 hours per year or 1h40m per week you could be down... ouch. -cw --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Chris,
I would have to consult the contract to confirm the figure, but
I do think we've far exceeded it (without gathering numbers, a
licked putting a finger in the air).
All of this uptime agreement stuff gets quite political quite
quickly, so I'm going to keep out of it.
But :
The DNS servers have built in redundancy (unless you hardware
your lookup to hit one server in particular).
The registry data only goes into effect once a day (at around
4:00pm when the zone build kicks off)
Which leads me to believe that it's really all about the
timely confirmation of applications to register or change
a domain.(ick, sounds like Manager speak....)
Now I've stirred the waters, I'll await your responses....

Yep, no improvement in 3-4 years is pretty good going on the Internet. Just wait for the new system, It will have improvements that few if anybody understands, and a level of complexity you wont believe.

This is the second time this has occured in recent days. I think we will move our automated system back to the trusty, easy to remember address of:- registry(a)domainz.waikato.ac.nz That other 4-e.mail/(*&^ytemplate or what it was address only aliases above anyway. regards Peter Mott Chief Enthusiast 2Day.com -/- --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
