[dangerously off-topic] Government to Regulate Routing!

** Quite Possibly of Negligable Operational Interest ** The Herald has an article about the Telecoms review being carried out (or to be carried out, give me a break, it's early):
"Management of internet traffic" was the phrase that caught my eye. If this review strays into the issues of routing, traffic filtering and peering at the packet layer, then I am scared. Mind you, this is probably the Herald quoting some government press release, so I wouldn't necessarily expect any the terms contained within it to be accurate. Anyway, just thought I'd share this. I think it's because Telecom introduced 0867 to "manage internet traffic". An excerpt from their public notice: "Telecom has introduced a new number range - 0867. Internet Service Providers can use the 0867 range so their customers have continuing free Internet calling in Telecom local calling areas. The new service is enabling Telecom to better manage the huge growth in Internet traffic through its network. source http://www.telecom.co.nz/ispdialup/public/public.htm -Jamie --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Nah - Telecom announced that they were launching the 0867 system as a service to help manage the growing amount of internet traffic placed over circuits which has historically been used for voice calls, so when they say "Manage internet traffic" they are almost certainly referring to management at this level, not at an IP level.
