Hi Paul,
Assuming this is "like a DHCP" problem and the addresses are being freed up,
won't the issue continue unless additional IP ranges are allocated (ie: due
to the "growth").
Freeing up is the short term fix, what happens after that?
This issue has tied up a lot of time for my team and I want to be sure we
are providing an accurate story to customers.
Cheers.

Absolutely right - we are indeed expanding the IP ranges as you say. The
short term fix is to refresh the browser and connect again. More IP
addresses being added tonight - somewhat earlier than planned.

It's be nice to have proper IPv6 transit back to my office.
I'll second that. Though at home in my case :)

Absolutely right - we are indeed expanding the IP ranges as you say. The short term fix is to refresh the browser and connect again. More IP addresses being added tonight - somewhat earlier than planned.
Cheers

Hi Paul,
Assuming this is "like a DHCP" problem and the addresses are being freed up, won't the issue continue unless additional IP ranges are allocated (ie: due to the "growth").
Freeing up is the short term fix, what happens after that?
This issue has tied up a lot of time for my team and I want to be sure we are providing an accurate story to customers.
Cheers.

We're having an intermittent issue with IP addresses not being released. This means some customers may not be able to connect to the internet on their first attempt. Customers should try to connect again and should be able to get on to the web.
We apologise for the inconvenience.
Our engineers are working to resolve this issue at the highest priority and will keep this post updated with any changes to the situation.
We've experienced a huge increase in demand for mobile devices in the past few weeks and we are moving quickly to meet that demand.
Cheers

Hi Folks,
To save you the two calls and 30+ mins it took me to find this out, I'd like to advise that Vodafone is currently experiencing issues with Mobile Broadband. You may encounter error 619 when trying to connect to their network.
The problem is apparently widespread and is known to their helpdesk. No message is posted on the Vodafone NZ website.

Heh - You both bet me too it. I was going to reply to Paul with "*cough* IPv6 *cough*" I'm sure there are current reasons why additional v4 nets are a faster way to fix this, but I'd also like to think that the following conversation went on within Vodafone (or other carriers) as well "Phew that was close! We're almost out of v4 ranges though. Why don't we find out how hard this would be to do with IPv6 next time" Sure the handset support is limited at the moment - but if you're able to get even some customers off onto v6 then it might free up some more v4 space. My understanding is that most APNs in Vodafone give you an RFC1918 address, and NAT. I don't see that changing even if IPv6 is rolled out - translating between address families is painful, running dual stack is the winner here. -- Nathan Ward
Personally, I only tend to use the "internet" APN so I can get an actual public IP address. I've had several applications (mostly VPN clients) that break when I try to use the Vodafone APNs that do NAT. -----Original Message----- From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Dean Pemberton Sent: Tuesday, 16 March 2010 8:11 p.m. To: Nathan Ward Cc: NZNOG List Subject: Re: [nznog] Vodafone NZ Broadband Issues Nathan Ward wrote:

Vodafone is trying to get people to use the other APNs, because "internet" was a test APN with a limited number of IP addresses available. They have changed the www.vodafone.net.nz to give a public IP address instead of NAT. It's still restricted to outbound connections only. I updated the list last week on request of VFNZ: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=9780 Mauricio Freitas http://www.geekzone.co.nz http://www.geekzone.co.nz/freitasm http://www.twitter.com/freitasm -----Original Message----- From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Philip D'Ath Sent: Tuesday, 16 March 2010 8:13 p.m. Cc: NZNOG List Subject: Re: [nznog] Vodafone NZ Broadband Issues Personally, I only tend to use the "internet" APN so I can get an actual public IP address. They might have more luck if the mobiles weren't loaded with "Gateway" and "Internet" as default options, with "Gateway" not working with the preloaded apps on the phone, such as Google Maps.
I have a Nokia E61i, which isn't exactly a new phone. In the IP Config I can see that it has support for IPv6. At the moment it only reports it has a link local address (nothing on the other end talking IPv6 I guess ...). I think you might be surprised how many handsets could talk IPv6 right now. -----Original Message----- From: nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:nznog-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Dean Pemberton Sure the handset support is limited at the moment - but if you're able to get even some customers off onto v6 then it might free up some more v4 space.
