E-Mail Addy When registering a new domain
(A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups: nz.org.isocnz) Hiyas I have just created a new domain name in the .school.nz space. We have created many of these before for schools as they gain an internet presence. When entering the Name Holder Details, we used to enter the e-mail address as "principal(a)schoolname.school.nz". This was fine and all e-mail to the name holder made it to the desired recipient. I have already set up our mail server to accept mail for that domain. Now when I try and do the same thing with the new DRS system, I am told that the e-mail field is not acceptable. It states that you must use a real address. Presumably this is because their checks show that there is no such domain (as we are only registering it now!!). So, to get around it (the e-mail field is compulsory!) I have to enter a bullshite address with a real domain name (fakie(a)advcomm.co.nz for instance). This is hopeless! Now all e-mail intended for the Name Holder will be lost, whereas it used to get there fine! Why has this chnaged, and can Advantage change it so that it will accept an e-mail field with a domain-name that is still being registered? Thanks in advance! Dear Pete Thank you for flagging this issue; you are the first to have pointed it out (it doesn't seem to have caused a problem to other Registrars so far). First of all, it would be much appreciated if issues could be notified in the first instance directly to the Domainz Customer Service helpdesk at 4service(a)domainz.net.nz. This will enable us to handle them in an orderly manner. The requirement for a non-null holder_email has been in place since November 1997. However, the Waikato system only checked for valid format, not that the name was working. In an electronic environment, we do need to be sure that we can communicate when necessary, hence the need for a working email address. Many Registrars put an existing valid address in the holder_email, which can be changed later if required. Others put an MX record into their name server. We are happy to consider relaxing the checking if this is seen as a widespread requirement. One way to do this might be to waive checking the holder_email if it is within the domain being registered - on new registrations only. Comments? Andrew Mason (from Andrew McGhie's email)

Comments?
That is the soloution that immeiatly leaps to mind.. I have to admit that I would find this annoying too if I were registering a new domain. Especially if I was a private customer setting it up for myself and wanted all e-mail to go to an address at that domain. Dear Pete
My name has a letter r on the end
Thank you for flagging this issue; you are the first to have pointed it out (it doesn't seem to have caused a problem to other Registrars so far).
How would you know?
First of all, it would be much appreciated if issues could be notified in the first instance directly to the Domainz Customer Service helpdesk at 4service(a)domainz.net.nz. This will enable us to handle them in an orderly manner.
Not interested. They dont have any skilled people to talk to. Futhermore I have no time to talk on telphones. If you establish a discussion list where anybody can join and bring problems to your attention, whilst sharing possible solutions, then we all gain. That way this and other lists dont get inappropriate traffic. Your continued secrecy modus operandi will not be recognised by me

You have a reasonable right and a need to communicate with the applicant for a domain name and the entity for whom you bill. I dont have an opinion on whether you should be checking the validity or reachability of of an admin or technical contact email address. What I do have a *strong* view on is your company of changing system operation *without* notification, prior or otherwise. I can only assume this is happening as a result of your lack of understanding of the DNS in general, the business of maintaining a zone, and the operation of the UoW registry. Checking that the domain has an MX record setup on the registra's name servers should be sufficient to ensure that email sent to it is likely to go somewhere (even if it's just the mail server's postmaster box). I certinaly think it's important to be able to specify an address @ the domain being registered. That would work fine for us.
We hit that problem yesterday too.
