Clear advertising International routes on NZIX
I would like an explanation as to why Clear ( It looks like it was just fixed ) was advertising international routes in Waikato - router-hn#sh ip route www.cnn.com Translating "www.cnn.com"...domain server (140.200.128.13) (130.217.64.3) [OK] Routing entry for 207.25.71.0/24 Known via "ospf 1", distance 110, metric 10 Tag 2828, type extern 2, forward metric 10 Redistributing via ospf 1 Last update from 140.200.128.18 on Ethernet0, 11:20:10 ago Routing Descriptor Blocks: * 140.200.128.18, from 203.167.226.150, 11:20:10 ago, via Ethernet0 Route metric is 10, traffic share count is 1 [tonyw(a)wet tonyw]$ nslookup 140.200.128.18 Server: nscache1.iconz.co.nz Address: 210.48.65.2 Name: clearfr.nzix.waikato.ac.nz Address: 140.200.128.18 This caused a major outage on my network due to the routing tables filling up the available memory on some of my smaller routers. --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

This resulted from an incorrect BGP community list on our router at NZIX - controlling redistribution from our internal routing table. For some (as yet unexplained) reason this uncovered itself at around 6pm yesterday during OSPF-related problem resolution for a customer. I say unexplained because it would appear that the problem has potentially existed for some months but has not manifested itself until now.
This caused a major outage on my network due to the routing tables filling up the available memory on some of my smaller routers.
When did you first notice this, Tony? Were you able to contact anyone at CLEAR for assistance? As a last resort the APNIC or RADB entries should have some good phone numbers. This highlights the inability to sensibly filter mistakes from OSPF at NZIX. How many devices at NZIX are ready/willing to speak BGP and drop OSPF altogether? -Jamie --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
