Petition for provision of WHOIS server for .nz
Its been several years since requests commenced for an industry standard WHOIS server providing public access to .nz registry data. We still do not have one. 2day.com is now preparing a petition to present to ISOCNZ requesting it direct the registry company to have an official .nz WHOIS server up and operating within 60 days. Internet providers and other interested organisations who are interested in signing such a petition are invited to write to me privately to obtain a copy of the document to sign and return to us for compilation. That just grabs information using HTTP requests from domainz.waikato.ac.nz With respect, I dont wish to rely on Joes site to run my business. ISOCNZ are getting thousands of dollars of revenues from us. We expect more. Aye.

Agreed. The fact that someone got peeved enough to hack up something to do the job because DOMAINZ/ISOCNZ can't be bothered says much. AB --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

I put a slightly modified version of the script on whau.its.vuw.ac.nz some time ago. It can be queried from anywhere, but you should be aware that the IP address of any querying machine is logged - I like to know who's accessing my system. For this to be truly useful and effective, this requires more than new interface to the existing data -- for `whois' type data to be useful, you really need some kind of NIC handle system -- something which the current system(s) are not well suited towards.

For the reason I mention above, I don't think 60 days is a reasonable time frame... how long -- I don't know, but ~2 months seems a little optimistic even if you assume that the domain holder details are correct (many of them are not, and many domain holders don't really know what a domain is more or less the important of reliable consistent information). -cw --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

My thinking was to get what could be done with ease going first, and come back to improvements once we have a basic WHOIS running

Lets not look for opportunities to delay action. A basic RFC compliant WHOIS server could be up in running in no time at all. In its initial stage, it only needs to answer a domain name query with the following data:- Registrant name and address Admin, tech contact details Name servers Billing information is not required Peter Mott Chief Enthusiast 2DAY INTERNET LIMITED -/- --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
