IP Address Management software.
Hiya all. 'Been lurking here for a while now, and actually have something worth saying now! I'm looking into IP Address Management packages. I've grazed through google, and a few others, and found pointers to many. It seems that there are a few packages that purport to allow people to manage IP Address space, but many of them focus on the integration of DHCP/DNS. Now, for what I'm after at the moment, this isn't an issue, and all I really want is something that can document allocations and what they're used for. There are some packages that don't exist now, and a couple that have changed hands within the last few years. An understanding of VLSM/CIDR etc. is required, although maybe not an understanding, but an allowance to docuement super/subnets. What do you, the contributors to this list use? And yes, I've done the spreadsheet thing to death... Well, just for documation of address space, a spreadsheet is as good as anything else. Checkpoint do have a product that ties in with DNS called Meta-IP. Apparently its quite good, but I personally haven't used it. --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Hardly... how do you manage what would amount to a /14 or /13 with a spreadsheet? Search the nanog archives, this comes up from time to time. There are various options but they all suck :) If anyone really interested I have a design for the be-all-and-end-all IP management and DNS tool that will surpass all those before it! Brighter colors, whiter whites, and the faster standing quarter mile ever. Requires cluefull persons with C experience and some SQL skills. Lack of time and too many other things mean an implementation was never started (also, it needed more funds that were probably easily available for the pay-back at the time). --cw --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
Well, with a network that size, I'd be looking for a commercial DB-based package. Maybe I should have qualified my statement - for a smaller network it works OK. How about something with PHP or perl generating the front end, and LDAP or a DB behind it. With automatic zone file creation too... There was an alpha project that did some of this on Freshmeat some time ago. Cheers, Gordon

Solarwinds (solarwinds.net) have a pretty cool suite of tools that include
among others, IP management tools. They cost, but if you have real buisiness
needs they are more cost effective than other commercial solutions (Ci$co
included), and will quickly justify the cost.
Network Address Recovery (This pings all IP address ranges that you tell it
on a predetermined regular period (default 4 Hours), and reports on the last
time an IP address was seen on the network)
There is a sample screen shot @

DHCP Scope Monitor (Requires Micro$soft DHCP and SNMP with obviously NOT
public as the community string)
