Fwd: 100,000 Reasons ...
Anyone else receiving spam which "is not part of a mass mailout" ?
They even fail to refer to which domain I should keep with domainz, as far as I
know I have moved my domains over to orcon almost a month ago.

Five messages for five domains thus far I think. Spread over several weeks though. I'm rather amazed they couldn't just unique over the destination email address but I guess there isn't an icon for that or something. I was going to leave my domains with Domainz because I couldn't be bothered dealing with this --- I'm not definitely going to move them now. Even if there is additional cost involved. I encourage others annoyed by these actions to do the same --- it's really the only way to let them know how you feel. If 20 people like myself do that we have 1000 domains they will loose as a result of this. Maybe one of the competitors could have a discount for 'annoyed me so lets move away from domainz' customers :-) Peter? :-) --cw
Does Domainz have the right to communicate with its clients? If you use Domainz as your Registrar, they have the right to communicate with you, right? The OpenSRS was implimented some time back; Its approaching the stage where everyone who had a domain prior to the OpenSRS has probably had their yearly rollover; and as a result has had opportunity to change registrar when renewing. I don't see anything wrong with Domainz communicating with people who have *chosen* to remain with them. ? (Opinions are mine and mine alone... etc)

Exactly. Domainz must have weighed up the positives and negatives of emailing their Registrants, knowing some might consider it spam and change registrars, and that others might be grateful for the information received. In any case, it seems more a matter for Domainz and its customers rather than the nznog community. Perhaps some don't appreciate there has been a change in the market, and people who don't like Domainz for whatever reason are totally free to change to another Registrar - there are more than 30 others to choose from. I see no tick box under domainz where it says I wish to receive emails from
them, so this is spam to me, even though they had an unsubscribe link in the
footer of their email. From what the way they word the emails, they saying
they have been in the domain registry for years and that you should stick
with them, this just shows how they are using their old monopoly.
I think they are targeting the n00b's out there that think the email was
sent directly to them one by one, as they mention it's not a mass mailout
when it actually was. I received a reply from my NZnog post for starting
this thread and this is what they had to say.
<quote>
On the 29th July you should receive an email from the Domain Name
Commissioner asking you to choose a new Registrar as part of the new
competitive market for .nz domain names. We are sending this email to all
our direct customers as we would like to continue as your Registrar.
</quote>
so it _WAS_ a mass mailout if they sending it to all their direct customers.
I didn't wish to be a customer of theirs when registering the domain, but
there was no other option at the time. I didn't see myself as a customer,
but rather as a peasant forced to use their service.

Don't whinge. If you don't like 'em move! Then they won't send you any emails at all. Barry Murphy wrote:

Well, that may not be true. Back in March Domainz emailed a bunch of registrants they were not the registrar for. For details on this check out http://www.nznews.org.nz/2003/03/04.html Steven Heath .nz news & views
