Open proxies - was RE: Spam on the increase ?

The model for advertising on the Internet was touted as 'ads on web pages' with click through etc. It's not exactly been a raging success -
Slightly related - During a moment of stupidity (I blame the shift in magnetic fields due to my being temporarily relocated some thousands of kilometers from my true home) I inadvertently removed the all important "#" from "#ProxyRequests On" on an apache box.. It took some time and someone far more cluefull than myself to relate this mistake with the strange GET's I started seeing in my http logs a few months later. I was seeing GET's for banner ads at a rate of a couple a day. Turns out my box and many other open proxies around the world were being used to proxy banner add hits to generate revenue for the scum who had the financial relationship with the banner add company. They needed to make the hits look as though they were coming from joe random customers hence the use of many open proxies. Something else to watch for.
