Incorrect / missing WHOIS details
Do any members present have any feelings about domain names that have misleading or ommited core/required contact details? I refer to cults.co.nz - a controversial religious themed website - though the issue at hand here is their whois, not their content. This may be a breach of rule 7.1 of the DNC's publication "Registering, Managing and Cancelling domain names" which reads- 7.1 When registering a new domain name the registrar will supply the following data: * Domain name. * Name server list. * Registrant contact details. * Administrative contact details. * Technical contact details. * Billing term. Also the registrar involved may be in breach of section 8.1 which reads- 8.1 Registrars will be required to maintain the details of the domain names for which they are the registrar. They will be able to amend/update the following fields: Name Server List. Registrant Name. Registrant Contact Details. Registrant Customer ID. Administrative Contact Details. Technical Contact Details. Billing Term. While the specifics as to whether this is a technical breach or not should be determined by the DNC and what I have stated above is only an opinion,. this is still a practice I feel should not be permitted to take hold in New Zealand. The publication mentioned is located at: http://www.dnc.org.nz/content//registering_managing_cancelling.pdf

Talking for Myself.... The Details given are below.. Without actually trying to verify the details given, the only problem I see with this is the Address and Postal Code which I see as a breach of the rules. Saying this, the Name and the Phone Number could be incorrect as well registrant_contact_name: Ian Mander registrant_contact_address1: On record registrant_contact_city: New Zealand registrant_contact_postalcode: 12345 registrant_contact_country: NZ (NEW ZEALAND) registrant_contact_phone: +64 21 607707 registrant_contact_email: editor(a)cults.co.nz The best thing to do is contact the Registrar at first and then the DNC if you have no luck with the Registrar. Registrars will do something if their details are wrong. For example last year Domainz Cancelled (for a while) alot of the Infamous Mark Mahony's domains after I pointed out that the whois details where very quite false (putting deliberately wrong details on domains): See http://www.spam.co.nz/111105-spammer.html Thanks Craig
If you havn't yet put this in writing to the registrar concerned and/or the DNC herself, I don't know why youre bothering NZNOG with it. The fact you've picked up one particular domain implies a specific issue with that specific domain or its owner, which doesn't really seem to involve the NZNOG community at large. The greater issue (of Domain Registration details) is up to the Domain Name Commissioner to enforce, and before you stir the pot in public I would've thought giving the DNC an opportunity to deal with this within the domain registrars community would've possibly been more appropriate?
