Hey people, Does anyone know the outcome of the ENUM trial in NZ (by InternetNZ), or is it still going? I've researched it a bit, but it seems the trial has ended (or maybe I just haven't searched hard enough ;)). Any info on ENUM in New Zealand or a pointer in the right direction would be great. Cheers, Nick Larsen

It's on hold at the moment, due to a mixture of resource constraints due to INZ's and Telecommunications Carrier Forum's involvement in Telecommunications Regulation issues over the past wee while. So it's a victim of priorities. (And of course, the best way to influence those priorities if one is not happy with them is to get involved and join the society.) <http://www.internetnz.net.nz/pubs/activity/2006/november/2006-11-30- enum> has the goods.

The latter ;).

It will be interesting to see where it goes. Unfortunately ENUM has been more than a bit hyped over the past few years. ENUM is not a VoIP service in it's own right, and only works well when all voice providers willingly partake. Given that ENUM requires involvement of the large players, it will be all to easy for the whole thing to get bogged down. Technically ENUM is fine, but I've yet to hear a reason for deploying it that is not in fact an argument for greater (in some cases, any) co-operation between existing voice providers. If ENUM is the pretence for achieving this, then that's a good outcome all the same. So when the trial gets back underway, get involved and we'll all see where it all heads. Meantime get your VoIP on if you haven't already, and encourage all to interconnect widely. Cheers, Jonny.
Cheers Jonny, Will look into getting involved, as we do have a VoIP (Asterisk) server, and do want to interconnect with others. The full blown ENUM trial hasn't occured yet. Having an ENUM trial on its own isn't really of huge benefit, other countries have already successfully proven that ENUM works[0]. Several of those countries have now implemented ENUM and you can register e.164 numbers in them today. What InternetNZ was more interested in is some of the related technologies and seeing how they could work. In particular Universal Communucations Identifiers (UCIs) and Personal User Agents (PUAs). In 2005 a PUA prototype was written to see how it would operate. The prototype certainly proved that the UCI/PUA technology works[1]. The InternetNZ ENUM task force page http://www.internetnz.net.nz/proceedings/tf/enum/ has more information on this topic and has some reports talking about the UCI/PUA technology on it. The PUA prototype is also available for download from that page.

There has been no trial. :( You can try using ENUM today though by going to http://www.e164.org. Cheers!
