Re: (fwd) History of Internet in NZ

Jonathan, Andy and I put the PC-router links in in late '89. They were running SLIP over the the DSIR's terminal network (with Tony van der Peet, then at DSIR, making the required changes to their precursors of the ACE boxes to allow for permanent links). The initial link was between Waikato and here followed up by a similar link between here and Massey. We ran a slightly modified version of SLIP to deal with the non 8bit clean nature of the lines and they ran at the glorious speed of 4.8K.
And a SHARED 4.8k at that. The theory was that there was sufficient spare capacity on the DSIR network to accomodate the DISR internal traffic and the University use. I believe I've got some old stuff relating to early Internet applications at the DSIR (from the P.E.L. at Gracefield - my father was Director of Administration at the DSIR mid/late 80s). I should try to dig it up. Short temper; something occupying a small volume making a large explosion... I suppose it does. :) Are you putting your hand up as someone who wanted to land a multicast tunnel or were you just making a rude gesticulation? ;) -- Josh Bailey (joshbailey(a)lucent.com) "Josh is... at large" -- F.W. --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Hmm. They must have moved the lunchroom (or the clocks, or both). When I re-cabled the distribution system for the clocks in 1981/2, they weren't anywhere near the lunchroom! -- Andrew P. Ah, what fun though! It was like two cups at the end of a very narrow piece of string that we could just hear the Internet through. Cheers, Ken --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
