Hey Alan... happy to take this to the council as I agree it is worth us doing. In fact it has been discussed and some policy which covers Zone Transfers, which has also been discussed in nznog, will need to incorporate such a service. This policy should be posted in the not-to-distant future. Look forward to receiving the Petition. Why wait until a petition is organised?

Who said we were waiting? We have been discussing this and your planned petition seems like a good way to get some more viewpoints. We would welcome your input Peter as well as those of others.

Certainly they are two different mechanisms for retrieving information from the DNS and as such there is a relations. ISOCNZ is concerned that this information is accessible for legitimate use, which is why WHOIS came up as part of the discussion on Zone Transfer policy. Why only now? People have asked for this many times before? I hope this isn't going to the council to be discussed by bureaucrats and then ignored once again?

Presumably this will have something to do with closing ns99.waikato.ac.nz to zone transfers -- something I don't see much merit in doing so because many people have legitimate reasons for wishing to do this. After politely pointing out ns99.waikato.ac.nz was unreachable a couple of weeks back, I received mail from someone at Domainz who was very defensive about the whole thing and seemed somewhat put out that I might want to perform zone transfers from there... it seems Domainz (or at least some people there) are very protective with the *.nz zone information even though it is public domain; http://www.domainz.net.nz/reference/definition.html#Use [...] All information collected will be considered as information within the public domain. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ [...] Then almost immediately goes on to say: All information collected will be held in the Domainz registration database, the content, form and interfaces of which are copyright and property of Domainz. How public domain content can be copyrighted I don't know...
Look forward to receiving the Petition.
Your not serious are you? It may take much more. The facts speak for themselves. Previous requests have not resulted in action. Peter Mott Chief Enthusiast 2DAY INTERNET LIMITED -/- --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

I am not aware that anyone has made any requests to ISOCNZ to look at adding a WHOIS server, so I cannot make much comment on what you call "previous requests" Peter. As I said, I am happy to pursue this with the council and welcome discussion one what the players believe would be the appropriate type of server. Certainly you might want a quick "off-the-shelf" solution Peter but lets see what other's have to say. Thanks for your suggestions.
