Hi, This morning a client called up to advise all their PC's stopped being able to send via my smtp server which they had been able to do an hr before. I suggested they reboot their router (M1122) which they did, however smtp still doesn't work. I had the client connect using smtp.xtra and they had no issues, further tests indicated they could ping the smtp, connect to port 80 on it but not port 25, not even mail.orcon.net.nz, this happens on all 14 hosts. The user has no firewall settings on the router, no local firewall and is using nod32. Just wondering if anyone is aware of xtra blocking port 25 ? Cheers Barry

Taking a leave out of the Steve book: Do you actually read this list? Check the archives for keywords "xtra block port 25" and "OMG death to the internet!" :) Cheers, Jonny.

Thanks to all, I do recall this happening now, though I thought it must have been cancelled as I never received complaints from customers, guess it only kicks in when their router reboots :/ Cheers

You can actually get the customer to ring Xtra, and ask them if they can unblock them... They will ask them al ot of questions, and advise them that using xtras smtp server is the best way to do it, but... eventually they will unblock... That is... if the customer has a good relationship with Xtra / Telecom (spend $$$) :D Antonio Broughton Barry Murphy wrote:

Or you could use the web-based form... http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,13904,00.html James Butler -----Original Message----- From: Antonio Broughton [mailto:anacarda(a)flerwin.net] Sent: Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:02 To: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: Re: [nznog] smtp via xtra seems blocked You can actually get the customer to ring Xtra, and ask them if they can unblock them... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: RIPEMD160 Or, if you control both ends of the SMTP connection, you could use the SMTP standard port for message submission (587) and it will Just Work(tm) -- that is, until Xtra block that port too. Jasper Antonio Broughton wrote:

You only need to spend enough money with Xtra to have a DSL account. http://www.xtra.co.nz/port25 Follow the instructions in the bit on 'opting out'. This is a bit easier than talking to Xtra on the phone, or getting the client to do so, as long as you can get hold of their account name/password :)
