Free Software Mirror Group's fourth birthday
Hi all, Just a quick note to say that yesterday was The Free Software Mirror Group's fourth birthday (we think). Which is quite incredible. I've said it before but I'd like to say it again: thank you to all the support and aroha we've received from the NZ operator community to facilitate the work we've been doing. In particular our sponsors: - REANNZ, who provide us with power, colo and a fat series of tubes - Insomnia Security, Catalyst, Advantage Computers, who contributed heartily towards hardware - and WAND group for letting Brad spend so much time on FSMG stuff :) And thanks to everyone else who's offered hardware, compute time or other resources. I'd also like to personally thank the two volunteers who've done huge amounts of work on the project: - Brad Cowie - James Forman I couldn't have kept things running as smoothly without you guys! Here are some highlights of our work in the last four years: - Upgraded our PoPs to 10 gig connections to REANNZ (Wellington on hold due to pandemic) - Official NZ mirrors for: - http://ftp.nz.debian.org - http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com - https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/archlinux/ - https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/debian-cd/ - https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/kali/ - https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/pub/OpenBSD/ - https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/raspbian/ - Unofficial mirrors for a variety of other things, check out https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/ for a list - Presented at LCA on our mirroring infrastructure - Built Ansible playbooks and numerous pieces of in-house tooling to automate and improve the process of running software mirrors (which we still want to open source!) If you're interested in seeing some stats on what we mirror, how much bandwidth we're using etc, you can find it on our dashboards for each site: https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/.fsmg/nodes/hlzmel/ https://mirror.fsmg.org.nz/.fsmg/nodes/wlglam/ Our goal for 2020 and beyond is still to upgrade the hardware we're using and to open source our infrastructure tooling. We're not sure what this is going to look like yet but we'll keep folks in the loop :) Cheers again and if you have any questions or want to chat, we're in #fsmg on freenode. -- Michael Fincham
