HELP Please - Mail record resolution for fisherfunds.co.nz
Hi All, Have always been reading but never posted. Have this problem here with resolving the mail record for fisherfunds.co.nz . Tkns for any assistance in advance. I have this mail server at clients connecting via Xtra ADSL network using their default DNS servers (202.27.184.3 / 202.27.184.5) to resolve a mail record. Have tried mail / smtp / mx @fisherfunds.co.nz without any luck. I know that fisherfunds.co.nz is hosted on Xtra and uses Xtras mail servers. As I can successfully send mail to fisherfunds.co.nz from Orcon internet. So to sum it up my mail server and the target domain is both on Xtras network, but my mail server cant resolve their Mail record to deliver mail. How does other people E.g Orcon get the mail delivered? What is not working? Thanks Felix Ultra Tech Ltd
Not really on topic for NZNOG but I can supply this information: blakjak(a)babylon:~$ dig fisherfunds.co.nz MX ;; ANSWER SECTION: fisherfunds.co.nz. 86400 IN MX 10 mx1.xtra.co.nz. fisherfunds.co.nz. 86400 IN MX 20 mx2.xtra.co.nz. So Xtras mailservers are the MX. This what orcons servers show as well. So when you say your mail server 'cannot resolve the mail record' what do you mean exactly? If theyre a client of Xtra I suggest you get them to contact their business technical support on 0800 BUSINESS (287 463). I further suggest that NZNOG isn't the appropriate forum for this issue, at least at this point :-) Cheers, Mark On Tue, 18 Feb 2003 zapf11(a)ihug.co.nz wrote:

Felix: Using Don's stylish little DNS checker at: http://www.checkdomain.nz.net/checkdomain.cgi?domain=fisherfunds.co.nz&submit=Query You'll observe that your MX records point to a CNAME: $ mx fisherfunds.co.nz fisherfunds.co.nz MX 20 mx2.xtra.co.nz !!! fisherfunds.co.nz MX host mx2.xtra.co.nz is not canonical fisherfunds.co.nz MX 10 mx1.xtra.co.nz !!! fisherfunds.co.nz MX host mx1.xtra.co.nz is not canonical $ host mx1.xtra.co.nz mx1.xtra.co.nz CNAME mta.xtra.co.nz mta.xtra.co.nz A 203.96.92.132 $ host mx2.xtra.co.nz mx2.xtra.co.nz CNAME mta.xtra.co.nz mta.xtra.co.nz A 203.96.92.132 This may or may not be the problem - it's disallowed in RFC 1912, but http://www.visi.com/~barr/rfc1912-errors.html suggests that it should generally be OK. Either way, it might be worthwhile having a word in the ear of Xtra and suggesting that they replace the CNAME's with A records. ( you could also wonder why they put in two MX's in your domain and then point them to the same IP, but presumably that's a transitory thing, maybe mx1.xtra and mx2.xtra sometimes point at different IP's ). I believe that's historical accident - I believe new Xtra-hosted domains just use one MX record now. mta.xtra.co.nz/smtp.xtra.co.nz are load balanced, and you'd find a metric buttload of SMTP servers in behind them. Cheers Richard
As Simon and others have pointed out, you really need to provide more
information.
What do you mean when you say you've tried mx, smtp, etc?
What is the client's mail server? Is DNS set up correctly?
How have you tried to resolve the MX pointers?
This really sounds a lot like this client has a mis-configured server.
A description of how email works is probably not approprite for the list. If
you wish to know how MTA's, etc exchange massages, you can email me off list
and I'll give you some starting points.
Mail transport is quite a big subject... :-)
BTW, if anyone from XTRA is reading this... just a wee nitpick. There's no
reverse set up for fisherfunds.co.nz
Cheers,
Gordon
