I've been getting a few good old snail mail letters from Domainnamesnz.com offering me to register domain names. Eg: I own learnbydestroying.co.nz and the "offer" is for learnbydestroying.net . How ever since these letters include; Reference #, MPID ? , Closing Date, Credit card details, and very little info to conclude that this is a Renewal many people have inadvertently paid the money ( $237 for two years ! ) thinking it's a Domainz or other registrar invoice. I'm not questioning the legality of this , as I am no expert, how ever im interested to know how so many of my clients and myself ended up with these letters? Anyone else experienced these letters or perhaps had clients pay for what they thought was a valid renewal? yes, we have received around 1/2 a dozen so far, some of my clients got them
directly and were just going to pay it!
hrmm, in reading the small print on the back it also says something about
not being able to change registrar's for a whole 60 days after 'transferring
to them'

Hello all. Businesses have been told for the last several years to have systems in place to assess invoices arriving in the mail. This has been the case since newspaper advertising scams. (Old stuff). Just like businesses have been told over and over again for the last 4 years to have an effective A/V system and update their software. Yet peoples computers still get infected. yada yada.... When stupid people wake up and start taking responsibility for themselves, the businesses/scam artists that prey on such, will have to give up and get an honest occupation. Until that day, (If it ever comes), these people are best left to their own devices rather then having everybody hold their hand in the big wide world. In the same way ISP's offering flat rate accounts for only 20 bucks a month should not put themselves in a position of allowing themselves to become the defacto computer support service for people who can't RTFM. Im not speaking for any ISP here, But if customer X is paying me $1000 month for service im not about to tell him to Sod off. And as we all know, When domainz send an invoice to a customer, They call the ISP. Its part of the service. Its all a bit frustrating I know but its what we choose to accept in some cases. Education I agree is a good idea, So many ISP's are doing some good work to educate customers on the risks, i.e.: AV & spam filters in mailers. Many of us saw this as good money making opportunity, its commendable to these ISP's that most offer it for free, its all about the customer. We do need them. Not saying your observation is wrong Michael, Just that I really wish it was that easy :) Best Regards Matthew G Brown Managing Director B & R Holdings LIMITED Nelson, New Zealand Ph: 027 4807731 Http://www.brh.co.nz -----Original Message----- From: Michael Hallager [mailto:michael(a)networkstuff.co.nz] Sent: Thursday, 7 August 2003 2:29 p.m. To: Dan Clark Cc: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: Re: [nznog] DomainNamesNZ Hello all. I should elaborate here. I go out of my way for people who spend good dollars with me as well. However, I can not overlook the fact that in my experience, the ones who are the biggest hassle are often the least spenders.

It is brillant to take commercial advantage of an opportunity. It is not brillant to have dumb arse home user clients who quibble to the last dollar waste your time with stupid questions. I think most people will understand where I am coming from and what I mean and that my last post was short on situational-explanatory words. It is easy Matthew - What I do is tell people right from the start that I only deal with businesses and will not hold their hand with their general windows problems.

One of our customers (that we know about so far) received one of these letters, offering to "renew" their domain name, except its a .com verison of the .co.nz domain name which they actually have. All their contact details were correct, and have obviously been retrived from a whois or domainz lookup. (Whether manually or automatically, who can say) The amount for 2 years was also $237. Given the amount of money they're asking for (nearly 5 times some .com registries) the possibly questionable way customer details may have been obtained, and the very deceptive wording of the whole letter making it appear to be a domain name renewal, it makes the whole thing highly dodgy IMHO.
