RE: History of Internet in New Zealand to current date
I would have thought the best person to ask about this subject would be John Haulker. Tim Williams seems to remember a lot about what happened... -----Original Message----- From: fwetyson [mailto:fwetyson(a)slingshot.co.nz] Sent: Wednesday, 28 March 2001 09:13 To: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: History of Internet in New Zealand to current date Ive been lurking around watching the postings and discussions here for the last few months and felt this was the place to pose the following question? Where does one find accurate information regarding the History and Development of the Internet here in NZ ? Most information Ive read (with the exception of postings here) is circa 1997 In recent times there has been many courses in IT commencing in the various technical institutions and locating accurate up to date information has been a major effort The most recent I could find was at http://www.iscr.org.nz/documents/enright.pdf Most others as I said havent been updated prior to 1997 Considering the many years of experience here and the wide range of organisations maybe this needs to be reviewed Finally I appologise if this isnt the place to raise this discussion Frank Tyson Student CyberTechnology Hutt Valley Polytech --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

It must be hard going through life with your name being mis-spelt 75% of the time... Main information sources I have seen are some files that use to be buried at the Waikato Uni's ftp site and also a couple of papers that were done about two years ago (vuw perhaps). Is anybody else here effected by the lack of peering with Asia Online from telecom global gateway? AOL's network is being advertised from AU at the moment, result being we have a lot of domestic traffic routed accross our international link. What is it with Telecom, have they given up fighting Clear and now trying to beat up Asia Online? I am unsure as to why this could be, but I am assuiming that it's simply that they havent set up any peering with Telstra over APE yet - Asia Online have always been very forthcoming with peering arrangements in the past, so I would be very surprised if it was caused by Tony or anyone else at Asia Online causing slowdowns. BTW, Xtra is peering with them at WIX, so I assume that Andrew Cutler will be setting up peering over ape at some stage. Cheers. So why don't you peer with Asia Online at APE like everybody else? -- Simon Lyall. | Newsmaster | Work: simon.lyall(a)ihug.co.nz Senior Network/System Admin | | Home: simon(a)darkmere.gen.nz ihug, Auckland, NZ | Asst Doorman | Web: http://www.darkmere.gen.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

What's access and core business got to do with anything? There are banks, gummint depts, all sorts of whatnot attached to WIX - why should peering be restricted to "access providers"? If your ISP won't peer with the right other peers, cut out the middleman, and do it yourself. The issue is, Telecom has connections to both WIX and APE but they ( apart from Xtra ) won't turn them on, well at least to us anyway. We refuse to pay Telecom for a pvc to them anymore when there are not one, but two mutually acceptable peering points that we are connected to. Everyone else but "Netgate" is very efficiently peered on either or both APE and WIX. I don't think it's that Telecom won't peer eventually, but that they are, for reasons that only they obviously understand haven't turned it on. -----Original Message----- From: owner-nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:owner-nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz]On Behalf Of Peter Mott Sent: Wednesday, 28 March 2001 10:23 a.m. To: nznog(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: Telecom global-gateway peering Is anybody else here effected by the lack of peering with Asia Online from telecom global gateway?
