Hi all, I note the 2912 switch that constitutes APE is full and has now been supplemented by a Dlink one. While Dick Smith may be quite happy selling these devices to their customers, I don't think it is entirely appropriate to be a central point for New Zealand's Internet traffic. Perhaps the nice people at Cisco ( or another civic minded manufacturer ) would like to donate something more appropriate for the task, like a 3548xl say ? --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Cisco specifically donated a 3512 or 3524 for this purpose. And we are happy to continue supporting this very important activity. I will find out from the owners of this what is going on..... Rgds Roger de Salis Tony Wicks wrote:

The D-Link arrived when our technician went to liven another ISP and found one with 3 ports. Of course doing the unplug thing wasn't appreciated, so a quick solution was implemented. A new switch is on order, but donations/loans/toys, etc always accepted. I also need a new switch for my LAN at home - GbE preferred. I hope the new switch will go in very soon, along with a BIG alarm on the doors of the cabinet. I have already mentioned to one Telco that locating gear in our rack without asking is not very polite. richard.naylor(a)citylink.co.nz --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Perhaps locking the rear door on the cabinet would help... or even shutting it... Pfft. Everyman and his dog has had a fossick in the Citylink APE rack - without a fairly relaxed access policy, APE could've been another example of a failed IX attempt in Auckland. Now that APE is being used by a reasonable number of ISP's for serious peering, you can assume that security in the Citylink rack *will* tighten. Maybe we'll pinch some of the groovy alarms from the Telstra racks :-) Cheers u --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Axis makes webcams that have leads to which you can attach solenoid trip lines (and other proximity detection devices). Put the cam web site on the Internet and send out a SMS message to everyone with a concern in the matter. Spread the cost around participants and you're looking at a $100 solution. Nice self policing solution that removes any need for direct intervention and keeps annoying alarm systems from being disabled because "it was making too much noise and I couldn't conentrate on what I was doing". --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
