OT - webcam locations and my weather station
Thank you to all those who brightened up my day with suggestions on webcam locations. (I'm sick in bed with a bad cold/flu). The suggestions brought on many coughing fits and my wife threatened to take the lappy away (wireless cards rule). Some suggestions were, + Kelburn - ah isn't there a large "national" organisation doing this stuff ? (remember at least one cam has a weather station) + Holt Cres, Ottawa - + Devonport, Auckland - A citylink weather station and cam IS coming to downtown AKL + Tasmania + Piha Beach + Wellington Stadium - we already have a camera there on a lighting tower. Must install the IP stuff........ + Outside the Mermaid Bar. - Inside would get more hits ! (Where is this bar Sid ?) And yes I KNOW Tawa is both windy and cold. I live there. Thank you for the many kind and thoughtful comments on our weather. There is no external cam at home otherwise you would all tell me to cut the grass. I am managing to get my sons to do that. I do the mower and weed eater repairs <sigh> However, Jeremy has a camera at http://www.r2.co.nz/~jeremy/webcam/ - If you have any REALLY funny locations for web cams or ones that might endear teh Internet to the rest of the population (like avoiding motorway queues, etc) please let me know off list. I think we haven't had enough fun lately rich richard.naylor(a)citylink.co.nz - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

OK... the IDG bogs would be good, especially after editorial "meetings". This won't get me fired will it? -- Juha Take off every sig! - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

At the moment, as far as I know, there are no real laws about "live internet broadcasts" in NZ. But something is being worked on, but I can't find out what exactly :-( Does anyone know what they _are_ trying to bring in? A Real time Live Internet broadcast doesn't come under the Films and Publications Act, nor the Broadcasting Act (as I don't think they ever thought about the Internet as being a real time broadcast medium). But Static Pictures/Web Pages etc (gif/jpg/html/whatever) do come under the F&P Act. Disclaimer: I didn't believe this for a minute - but it is a funny story and does ilustrate the misconceptions regarding this matter. At a previous job in NZ where I was network manager, we were having a piece of hardware vandalised This was situated in a public area and we suspected that it was infact staff members vandlising it. A webcam was stationed on top of this unit in plain sight so as to deter people from doing anything to it. The webcam was not actually connected to anything but thats not the point. We were informed by management to remove said camera because it clearly was in breach of the Privacy Act and violated the privacy of the staff who worked around this area. =) Somehow the Security cameras in the lobby weren't doing this however. Sometimes the act gets used as a hammer where it's just not needed =) Dean On Thu, Jan 03, 2002 at 09:11:10PM +1300, Craig Whitmore wrote:

Umm.. I thought it was Legal if the Staff where told the cameras where there and it may record them, but It would be against the Privacy Act if it was a "Hidden Camera" and the staff where not aware of it. In all areas I've seen which I've seen cameras (even the ones in downtown etc), there is a sign someplace saying something like Cameras in Use. The Privacy Act means even the Police (as far as I know) have to have signs on the roads saying "Speed Cameras may be in use" (or something like that) Thanks Craig Whitmore Orcon Internet - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Yeah - this place had cameras all over it. And the one that we installed was in plain sight. I think it was just a ploy. Dean - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Well have a read of this NZ Herald story URL: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=583699 Basically teacher set up hidden video cam to catch the thief. it worked but apparently the school board chair decided the teacher had breached the child's (who was the thief caught) privacy by using a hidden video camera. Sort of similar but your webcam wasn't hidden. Lin - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
