Jamie, To me the notion that ORBS is "attacking" is obviously specious.. so one goes on to wonder why Dean Anderson's message carries any appearance of credibility.. Hopefully whatever merit you see in Dean Anderson's message is soon run to ground by a little net research. That research will show that Dean Anderson is well known for "imaginative and persistent postings" and got himself kicked out of spam-l and spamtools, etc.. and that he features in a list of Net Kooks. Alan Brown /ORBS is assisting the FBI in some respects.. yes. Dean Anderson assisting the FBI? ... as a weapon of irritation perhaps :-) if you have some ideas on what would reduce the frequency of his "helpful" calls ... they might like to hear from you :-) Robert Hunt --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

FWIW I believe that testing a mail relay for "openness" for the purpose of informing the operator is not an attack. How one chooses to treat the information is a separate, sensitive, matter.

I deliberately made no judgement whatsoever as to the merit of Dean's message. Quite frankly I couldn't care less as to his qualifications. I forwarded the message as something that might be of operational interest to NZNOG readers regardless of whether they agree with his sentiment. At the very least it might help someone unravel some potential mail routing issues. Is it true that BBN blocked ORBS? I find that quite astonishing, if it is indeed a fact. --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

It isn't true. I'm on fairly good terms with BBN/GTEI's security admins. The list of secondaries should provide some idea of the support ORBS has worldwide: relays.orbs.org name server ns2.alaweb.com relays.orbs.org name server ns.asimov.net relays.orbs.org name server metallica.roka.net relays.orbs.org name server ns.fh-kiel.de relays.orbs.org name server skynet.simkin.com relays.orbs.org name server sunsite.auc.dk relays.orbs.org name server callisto.poteidaia.net relays.orbs.org name server ns2.austria.eu.net relays.orbs.org name server bajusz.iif.hu relays.orbs.org name server ns.uni2.net relays.orbs.org name server orbsns1.p80.net relays.orbs.org name server orbsns2.p80.net relays.orbs.org name server ns.orbs.mirrors.degnet.de relays.orbs.org name server nic.aix.gr About 50,000 nameservers are making lookups in ORBS at frequencies which suggest mailservers doing the queries - and there are some "interesting" organisations using ORBS for mail filtering purposes who'd prefer the world didn't know about it. It says on the page referenced above: "Please note: Database dumps are just that - details of hosts which are in the database. We don't scan netblocks to provide this information and because of this an ORBS dump is not a comprehensive list of open relays in the netblock - just details of the ones we know about." I'm not sure who the "we" concerned is but I see requests from a particular netblock maintained by a particular admin who just happens to host the ORBS site going through our network ranges on a regular basis... anyway, the point of my post, does anyone in NZ actually use the ORBS database on there mail servers (aside from the obvious) as a spam blocking tool? XTRA, IHUG, ICONZ, Clear, Voyager?? Regards Shane --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
