Any know anything about this crowd? Their name has come up in connection with a spamming incident that we got involved with.
From the web site they could be a legit 'bulk mailer' (if that isn't an oxymoron) or bunch of ratbag spammers. I'd like to have some more information before we decide what to do next.
Russell.

You can look into this 2 ways. smartmailpro doesn't supply the database of people to send the emails to (as far as I can tell). All they do is the actual email and the design of it. BUT I cannot find anywhere on their website that have a anti-spam policy of any kind. I think "mail for hire" companies have to have a much strictor policy on this. citysales.co.nz may be in the wrong . I don't know how they got the email addresses for smartmailpro to use, But people have complained. People don't complain when someone you already have a dealings with or have asked to be on their emailing list. Also to note (as far as I can tell from the google archive).. The From: header is City Sales Ltd sales(a)citys.co.nz (The MFROM is bounced(a)smartmailpro.co.nz), but citys.co.nz domain doesn't exist and anyone in 5 mins can get it. Thanks Craig www.spam.co.nz

I'm afraid that they do, now and then. -- Jamie Riden / jamesr(a)europe.com / jamie.riden(a)computer.org "That's why I love VoIP. You don't get people phoning up to complain that the network is down." -- Peter Corlett

Thanks to those who responded. It now appears to be a storm in a tea cup and I did not recognise it for what it was (I've got the flu and brain is working at half rate :) Looks like it is a case of a user of ours who has redirected their mail to AOL and then flagged the mail as spam causing AOL to complain. First glance it looked as if it had been relayed through us. Close examination of the mail logs on Monday should confirm this one way or the other. What was interesting was that the only way you can relay mail from outside out address range is to authenticate and that's why I got excited... Cheer, Russell

I've certainly seen plenty of other similar ones over the years on systems I work on where somebody rings us up to tell us we are open relay but after investigation is turns out it is just a forward. This has happened to others to the extent that some people no longer allow customers to forward their email to external sites (especially AOL). Perhaps this sort of limitation will become common in the future. BTW: If anyone knows somebody as Bar Bodega (bodega.co.nz) in Wellington, could you perhaps explain to Tane McLeay why mass mailing random people isn't really an acceptable promotion method. -- Simon J.
