ATS Switch for 1-3 Devices
Hiya folks, Looking for a cost-effective solution to automatically switch a non-redundantly-powered device between redundant power supplies. For example running a single switch between a UPS-backed power supply and a direct-mains power supply, so that I have some tolerance should the mains supply to the UPS fail (or the UPS itself). Essentially something like this: http://www.cdlnz.com/index.html?do=viewproduct&p=NR605&code=RP-ATS But i'm looking for something relatively small and for a relatively low number of devices (say anywhere from 1 to 3). I'm also not necessarily looking for >10A 240V; the gear that'll be being run, is quite low current. Anyone got any recommendations? Thanks Mark.
Hi,
We hunted around for quite some time and didn’t find much that we liked when we were using them, they all seemed a bit twitchy, but we’ve had good results from the APC ATS range - we have 10 or so of them in use. YMMV but they seem really solid, and we’ve have had no issues with them. We have the AP7721 (http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP7...) & AP7723 (http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP7...) - not sure they go as small as you’re saying you want to go, but there are a few options here: http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=14 http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=14.
TechPac has them in stock from time to time. We ordered them through Dominic at Sereno.
Cheers,
Gerard

We had one made up for us by Rack Power - was somewhere around $200-$250 from memory a couple years ago. http://www.rackpower.co.nz/10A-IEC-horizontal.html Ours has four output sockets and two input sockets, and a big relay inside. So it draws power from one input but should it fail, then switches to the other input in ~30 ms. That's quick enough for a switchmode power supply to not care. Your other option is an automatic bypass switch for the UPS, if they exist for your model and are not silly money. -- Criggie http://criggie.org.nz/
