Hazard Notification - ntp3.ntp.net.nz unreachable due to power shut down
To the NZNOG Community: NZRS would like to inform that ntp3.ntp.net.nz will be unreachable from Friday May 3rd at 4:00pm until Monday May 6th at 8:00am due to power work being carried out in the building where it's located. Although backup power is available for the computer room, the planned work exceeds the generator's autonomous runtime, so we've decided to shut the power down for the duration of the event. ntp1.ntp.net.nz and ntp2.net.ntp.nz will continue to work as usual. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. This, incidentally, is why there should be a fourth - so that if during this outage ntp1 or ntp2 get bad time, it doesn't break things for everyone, as the bad ticker will be able to be voted out.
How much are the hardware boxes for these?

Hopefully no one is actually using ntp{1,2,3}.ntp.net.nz, a best-efforts service with other single points of failure (eg, same hardware vendor/model and presumably software revision; same admins; ...), as their sole source of time. If nothing else including a few other separately run sources of time seems sensible as a sanity check, even if they're not quite as fractions-of-a-millisecond accurate. Ewen
http://www.msl.irl.cri.nz/services/time-and-frequency/ntp-server-information This is a caesium clock, so a good match to deal with possible common-mode failure of the GPS-synchronised ntp.net.nz servers. -- don On 02/05/13 14:38, Ewen McNeill wrote:
