APE, citylink, LOTR thingy

Can't see it at all here on Xtra JetStream. Nope nope nope, not a thing. where are my precioussssssss?
As far as I know, neither Telecom (GG nor Xtra) picked up the anycast announcement in Auckland. A shame, really, they presumably missed out on a charging bonanza - compare and contrast with TelstraClear, for whom we rushed through a GigE upgrade this afternoon when the Paradise 100Mb link in Wgtn saturated - props to the TC guys for looking for a solution rather than looking for excuses to ignore the problem. Yes.. Clear is advertising all their ranges to the APE RS's but not accepting anything except the Anycast AS it looks like. I wonder how long this will last until Clear remove the peering with the RS's because of the LOTR ending or block other people sending data to their peer @ APE (as they are advertising it to go there) Thanks Craig

The MJPG's are pretty broken. The only load up sometimes and even then they just die. The streams are pretty jerky. Regards Daniel Griggs eat-me(a)parasite.net.nz On Mon, 1 Dec 2003, Simon Lyall wrote:

Connected via APE. http://palantir.citylink.co.nz/courtenay/ works well about 2-3 fps http://palantir.citylink.co.nz/reading/ works well (except looks like has a little bit of water on the camera) Any of the R2 broadcasts either don't work or only has R2 advertising on them and repeats.. (too overloaded?) The NZOOM feeds don't play at all :-( Thanks Craig

I'm on a ICONZ/Whoosh connection and I can't even ping the anycast addresses. I guess that JSR et al have been too busy with telstra to bother peering with the video servers. Oh well. I have real work to do, anyway :) --- James Tyson Director, Giant Robot Ltd http://www.giantrobot.co.nz/

Nope - we're fully peered, I checked multiple times earlier this week, coming up to the event. :) The 384K R2 stream is working perfectly for me, and is _excellent_. Much Much Kudos to R2 and to Citylink for their hard work. JSR -- John S Russell | Big Geek | Doing geek stuff.
Yup, many many kudos to R2 / Citylink. Saved me beating the traffic out of the CBD! M On Mon, Dec 01, 2003 at 05:27:07PM +1300, J S Russell wrote:

I work for R2 and CityLink - so tks for the comments. R2 has servers in both AKL and WLG which were anycast connected. We had some issues with filters on teh routers and boxes conflicting, on the AKL box which delayed things going. Si and Andy were somewhat distracted., but we got it going. There were 2 multi-bit rate encoders in the van (a 3rd was doing mpeg-2) one for each server. One seemed to be producing jerky video, so we restarted it (not a great thing to do mid show). I'll play around to see if we can find teh cause. (prob still had it set for NTSC or somethging) I haven't looked at the logs yet, but it was bigger than last year. Last year was 2 servers in Wn and carried around 350 clients live (10,000 requests). What I did notice was that 384kbps was the most popular stream. Wn was carrying over 211 @384 and was only running at 3% CPU. Quite a good number of 384k clients on AKL. 128 k popular in AKL. (Can't get AKL stats as box is now shut down) Sunday night was also successful. Were processing the video now and should have it online tomorrow. It takes 14 hours per stream to transcode. Another box is rendering Mondays event. That should also be availablke tomorrow. FYI we generated 25GB of mpeg-2 video and 150GB of DV video. We were also feeding video (mpeg-4) to teh St James functions, and several feeds for TV3 and MoreFM. Some issues with the MoreFM audio codec which we'll have to understand. Now theres demand for the footage and dvd etc. So I guess teh work will carry on for sometime yet. more details when we can pull all the data together. This morning we took down all teh cables in CPlace. They have to be cleaned, coiled, tested, labelled, etc....... but now some lunch..... rich

We, err, somewhat under estimated demand :-). We've done 300Mb/s all day out of Citylink House, currently running at close to 600Mb/s, and traffic out of APE has been steadily climbing as services have come onboard, it's running at ~250Mb/s. I could have lived without the slashdotting at 9am :-).

R2 broadcasts have just come up in Auckland, so they should be viewable. Cheers Si
