Bassically let me explain myself. I'm working with Idiots - who don't know the differnce beteen ram or ip. So - when I say "Its a router - its job is to direct network traffic" - they'll say somthing like "Whoa - they must be pretty big - isn't there only one of those in the world" and a multitude of silly questions. Don't get me wrong silly questions arn't that bad - its just when lots of ppl ask the same questions it gets really annoying. So - it would be great for me to say - this was a cisco 2501 series router, it is uesed to (we all know) - when it was new it was worth $X, and now its worth $x/100 etc. Also - let me be honest, there is a double meaning or purhaps hidden agenda behind asking for this stuff. Firstly it is NOT so that I can have a cool network (make with older tech) at home, or purhaps so that I can sell it - or anything like that. (To prove it - if I mess with something worthwile - a 2500 series router for example that doesn't work -and I make it work good - I'll happily give it back). Firstly - I like to tinker with stuff. Since I'm only 16 years old it is hard trying to get cisco gear, and people get really upset when you tell them that your going to tinker with the nice new shinny router that you've just installed. So - it would be alot of fun (And somthing to do to pass the time) just to mess with really old and/or broken hardware - not nessasarily tring to make it work - just messing. Especially so that I have a better understanding of actually how stuff does stuff - so eventually I can be a better/more effective employee. Also - remember I am asking for gear that isn't being used anyway - purhaps piled in a corner or some other equal place - left where it fell from the last upgrade or somthing. I'm not asking for 7500 series routers which arn't being used right now - or a 4000 that doesn't have enough ram etc. I mean more like some cisco alphabet soup products - or purhaps a 2500 that got droped a long way and doesn't light up at all anymore. Stuff like that. Effectivly junk! Also - my other purpose. I really like cisco stuff. Becasue they are such cool things - 'cause of how well they are constructed designed. And if nothing else - it would be cool to have a bunch of boxes with "Cisco Systems" tags on them :D. So - to just to reiterate. I don't want this stuff so that I can make it work and sell it - or have a huuge network at home. I'm doing it primarily 'cause cisco is cool, and I LOVE to mess with hardware. Anything at all would be more than muchly appreciated - and would go to a "good home" and be messed with/worked on for months to come. Thanks alot - even for your time to read this. :D On Mon, 1 Apr 2002, Craig Spiers wrote:
If your only looking at the value of equipment, surely you dont actually have to have the gear.. You only need an approx value of what its worth?
I Personally dont think people on this list are stupid enough to hand gear over for that reason eh..

: Hello all,
Sorry for the off topic post, and comerical nature of this post. But, I'm looking at doing a project about the devaluation of equipment. How routers/switches/hubs etc. etc. which cost $$$'s of dollars, then become almost worthless only a few years latter. So for the project it would be good to have some old gear on hand.
So - I was wondering if people had old cisco switches/routers/anything, or any other branded equipment - thats old/broken/not relyable anymore that they wouldn't mind parting with. If you are in the hamilton/Auckland area, I'll come and get gear, or pay for shipping. I'm even happy to give a couple of dollars for stuff that still works okay.
Thanks alot! - it'd be very thankful for ANYTHING.
(BTW - please message me off list). --snip--

This is pretty low Roger. Paying kids to push Cisco in the schoolyard =) Seriously though. I wanted a Sun server at home for years. Really liked the kit and wanted to be able to have one in my rack at home just to play with. By the time I managed to get one, I realised that it really wasn't worth it. All the things that I had wanted to learn on it I had managed to learn on Linux instead. All I really wanted it for was label bashing value, so I just went out bought some more Nike t-shirts instead. So if you want to play with some networking gear, then don't fixate on a single vendor, concentrate on the things that you want to learn. There will more often than not be a better/cheaper/faster way of doing it. While you wait for all the free cisco stuff to come flooding in, you could be already learning the same stuff on linux for example. There is a Sun IPC (little bit bigger than a shoe box size) around someplace which is owned by Me (if anyone can find it). I'll give it to someone who wants to play with it Last time I saw it (_many years ago_ it was loaned to Midland Internet (Who no longer exist).. From then on.. I have _no _ idea where it got to. The only thing which may identify it is , is I changed the boot nvram to say my name before boot.. Thanks Craig Whitmore Orcon Internet

Long time no see Jeremy!!!
I dunno (maybe it was).. When I was looking after STaTuS (Before it was
called ICONZ), We brought 10 IPC's (they where fun and fast in those
days)(really slow in comparison now) and we sold/put a few around the place.
Maybe Bryce or Alan is Lurking around to answer the $10,000 question.
BTW: I loved those sun3's we had at ICONZ (I turned them into 21 ? inch B&W
X terminals) (They where out of date even in those days (over 10 years ago).
Has anyone thrown them out yet?
Maybe someone wants to write the "History of New Zealand Internet". I
remember registering a domain name was as easy as emailing
rexcroft(a)waikato.ac.nz saying I want "blah.co.nz" and it was done. I
remember the days when peering between IHUG and ICONZ was a 2 Metre Length
of Coax Cable.. I remember the days.....
Thanks

Easy for you, I had to fill out a form... --cut-here--- We are now requesting contact info in case their is any dispute over the domain name in the future. I will be comming up with a form but at present I would like: Company or Organisation Name. Is it registered as a company? The company's address and phone number. Name of person to contact at the company with regard the DNS name and their phone number. DNS entry in "bind" format that you wish added. (As I have listed above) If the DNS name is not based on the name of the company or a suitable abbreviation then I require arguments for that name. We only allow one DNS name per company/organisation/person. We will not allow selling of DNS names. Could you please supply this information before I add it. They changed a few things during the "old days" When I first started doing them (If I remember right (or maybe wrong) , you could register any domain name, and then they changed it to "the domain has to be something like the Company name" (a little like Australias has now). Those days you could register es.co.nz (you can't now if this was not taken) (but they made rules up than you can't register domains as the 3rd level being the same as the 1st level domain) (Anyone know the reason for this? (there must be a good reason)) (I want to register nz.co.nz and us.co.nz) There is a little NZ Internet History @ http://www.kcbbs.gen.nz/width.html And last year we talked about it as well http://list.waikato.ac.nz/archives/nznog/2001/03/msg00115.html Thanks Craig Whitmore Orcon Internet http://www.orcon.net.nz - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Some people's misconfigured and/or b0rken resolvers could get a little confused. I know, it's hard to imagine, but there are indeed people out there who have this problem. Don will be able to explain it better than I can :) Cheers R ps sorry about the overlong .sig :P -- Richard Stevenson, Systems Specialist, Xtra Limited In any given problem, Joe Monk will search his or her own memory first for an answer, analyse the problem, and eventually RTFM. Your out of luck, us.co.nz and nz.co.nz are taken... I _think_ that the restriction may have been lifted but I'm not 100% sure. :D
