Hiya All Thought I would give a heads up about that Domain Registry of America registration scam that's been going around for a while, I received a "Domain Name Expiration Notice" this morning about a .com domain we don't own asking for renewal and giving the option to register a .net and .org. I'm sure you are all already aware of the scam but I hadn't actually seen an example locally, till now. They might start doing the rounds...? Cheers Gav

Yup-got one last week saying my domain expires next month (it's paid up 'till 2005). They must have just recently pulled whois data because the letter came to my NZ address, and I've only been here since December. I also noted the curious fact that "Domain Registry of America" appears to be based in Australia... Was the domain in your case one with a renewal date in the near future? In my case, my domain does go up for yearly renewal on 25 Apr, so it's possible they're playing a little social engineering here-my initial reaction was that it may be up for renewal because I knew April is the right month. But of course I looked this up rather than writing a check, and quickly caught on to their little game. Regards, Ed Hintz ed(a)hintz.org
They have been a persistent scammer, also using names DRo Australia and Europe. Operate from Canada. They were supposedly ordered to cease these practices last year, see http://www.whois.sc/news/2003-12/registry-america.html We are talking to some of our US counterparts to see if they can help put more pressure on US/ Canadian authorities.
