The outage of ns99.waikato.ac.nz was not unexpected. But the length of
the outage *was* unexpected.
The University had to power down some of its comms gear at 4am Sunday
so the power could be changed to a different phase on our UPS
(we have a bad phase inbalance).
Some machines had a previous history of not liking the main IP switch being
powered off, especially those Intel boxes with DEC ethernet cards.
And Domainz2 (aka ns99) is one of those.
It took a long time to get ns99 working because it seemed to be destroying
switch ports. Several switch ports had to be tried before one was found
that ns99 liked :-) .
I would like to point out that the only time connectivity to ns99 is critical
is about 4:30pm each working day when the zone file are reloaded. At all
other times ns99 has the secondary nameservers of *.nz backing it up.

Thanks Rex, but with respect, Its not about ns99.waikato.ac.nz being down Its about DOMAINZ having in place a means of:- a) Being informed in advance of any work taking place that could affect service quality b) Industry being able to report problems 24/7 c) Knowing that somebody is being paid to respond at any time day or night to deal with outages. d) Having faith the those who control and deliver service know what they are doing The .nz name servers are an important infrastructure asset which our businesses rely upon.
