This is normal behaviour. When the .nz servers are under load, requests not coming from registrars are dropped. Either run the whois from a registrar website (or dnc.org.nz) or wait an hour or 2 and try again, and it should work fine. :)
I'm getting the same 440 error doing lookups through the Domainz website.... surely they count as a registrar ? Very annoying... Regards, Simon

Their web server probably isn't on one of their whitelisted IP's for registrar whois queries.

Or not, I am getting 3/4 errors when doing a whois. 3-4 errors for every successful attempt. Hmm perhaps in view of the discussions here the people who do the whois system/dns system for .nz might be interested in doing a wee talk at next years NZNOG on how it all works?
