http://www.vector.co.nz/news/153/ Power outage in the Auckland area (12/06/06) Auckland is currently experiencing a significant power outage affecting the Auckland City and Manukau City areas except for parts of Wiri, Otahuhu, and Takanini. The cause is a fault on the Transpower Network where a earth wire has snapped and fallen across the 110 kv feeder from the Otahuhu substation. All efforts are focused on restoring power as soon as possible. North Shore and Waitakere cities are unaffected. Everything is online for us in the CBD, although the power looks a bit wobbly out in Riccarton, but it's still on. Erin Dean Geoff wrote:

I guess the fibre has brought knowledge and enlightenment to Dunedin for some time, but does that make it venerable? /me wonders why this impressive fibre hasn't been mentioned in the NZ Internet History...

Hamilton never went off line. We did however experience a cascaded event of brownouts that resulted from the cause of the Auckland power outage.

No there are definitely parts of Hamilton out - Ruakura, traffic lights etc. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Hey Ian, Funny that, I had conflicting stories suggesting otherwise, such as Innovation Waikato (which is in Ruakura) stayed up. But it was a huge brownout, and I would expect a lot of failures resulting from this. I would also expect that various local feeders on various levels tripping out because of excessive in rush current, eg. motors restarting. I heard that the traffic lights went down in Hamilton and that was pretty much city wide which suggests that the central computer (located in the Municipal building) that controls the traffic lights may well have had a problem caused by the brownout. On top of all that, various places in the sticks on the WEL Networks area suffered outages due to bad weather, and with the varying restore times clearly backs up WELs suggestion that it was a local problem due to bad weather rather than from the TPNZ Otahuhu Substation incident. Anyway, the upshot of all this demonstrates the importance of back-up power (which is an operational matter).

From what I here other parts of Ruakura were down and the traffic lights were near Ruakura.

I've just had verified that the council system did not go down. This matches my experience of other traffic lights being OK when I travelled through them at the time other lights near Ruakura were down. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand
Just got a message, Paikakariki to Pukerua Bay on State Hiughway One has been closed due to high winds and seas. I guess in a way this is a good workout for the emergency backup systems. Now if only people didn't ring the phone companies to complain about the power being out.... Jo Foster

I thought that was due to the large truck full of vege oil that got nicely spread down the highway...? Was closed for a few hours. back trucking through now.. Speaking of traffic, are the Wellington wix cams still up? There was a little blip on our power in Ngauranga not and hour or so ago. It all seems to happy recover. I was just explaining the importance of upgrading our UPS the other week. ;) -Jo

The first Police Notice: http://www.police.govt.nz/news/media/update.html?id=2798 Time: 14:00 12-06-2006 District: Wellington Incident Type: Weather conditions and oil spill Location: SH 1, Pukerua Bay to Paraparaumu What happened: Police advise State Highway 1 between Pukerua Bay and Paraparaumu has been closed due to an oil spill and adverse weather conditions. Roading contractors are in the process of attempting to clean the oil spill and clear debris from the road. No diversions are in place. A further posting 1 hour later (id=2799) shows the highway reopened with a reduced speed limit as at 1500hrs. Also noted at 1730 there was a fault with the Barrier Arms for the railway lines through Paraparam which caused some traffic mayhem. (id=2802). Mark.
