Hi Folks, Anyone know of NZ-based Global Gateway or Spark infrastructure that responds to ICMP ping requests globally? On or off-list reply fine. I've found hosts in AS4648 that respond to ping selectively - from some, but not all of the servers I'm using to collect data for my project on peering in the Pacific http://pacpeer.org/ Bizarre & frustrating things going on with this network. Same for AS4771. Failing that happy to take suggestions for Auckland based single-homed customers on AS4648 or AS4771 that are fibre connected with 1-2ms latency from provider core - and don't mind the occasional ping. I've got Atlas probes I can ping, but they're on the end of consumer tails & that mucks up the stats. Thanks, Jon
Hi Folks,
Thanks for the multiple off-list responses. In summary:
1.) My goal was to find pingable IP addresses in AS4648 to measure latency
from Pacific networks for my project http://pacpeer.org/
2.) GG do not advertise all their IP addresses globally. This explains why
I can see some routers from some places, but not all routers from all places
3.) Few GG routers respond to ping
4.) Some servers maintained by GG respond to ping
I'm sorted on 4648, cheers. Any info on pingable hosts in AS4771 would
still be appreciated.
Cheers,
Jon

The methodology we used for IP topology discovery was trying to find pingable end points in the desired network. To do that, we collected all prefixes announced by the given AS as seen by multiple BGP sources, and then looking for IP addresses matching those prefixes in a couple of datasets from https://scans.io/: Full IPv4 ICMP Echo Request, and Rapid7 UDP scans. It's slow, but gives you a good coverage and you don't have to depend on GG having non-globally routable IP addresses. Cheers,
Cheers,
Jon
