Thanks for all your replies. It is now working ok, with and without the dot at the end, thanks. Looks like the problem has cleared now. The reason I asked the original question is that the icq client failed instantly to connect. Usually it sits there for a while and then times out if the icq network is temporarily unreachable. nslookup will append the "default" domain name to the given host if the given host does not contain a trailing "." Perhaps that is what you are seeing when you set debug. I assume that you do not see strangness when debug is off (I don't).
