Thanks for all your replies. It is now working ok, with and without the dot at the end, thanks. Looks like the problem has cleared now. The reason I asked the original question is that the icq client failed instantly to connect. Usually it sits there for a while and then times out if the icq network is temporarily unreachable. Adrian
