Today I received in the post the above 55 page document marked "commercial in confidence" within an envelope marked "private and confidential" Here are some snippets for your weekend enjoyment: "Domainz did not identify and supply appropriate personnel for the development and review of user requirements" "The project had suffered criticism from the community of interest throughout the development and implementation" "The total project costs to the point the system went live are estimated to be $841,000" "There is no evidence that project costs were reported to the board at any stage during the project" and one which we will all be surprised to read: "It appears that some members of the stakeholder community and the CEO of Domainz did not have an effective working relationship" The reviewer also had this to say about some of our postings to the project list server: "Often content was emotive, unprofessional and 'off topic'. In a corporate environment the tone and language use in these communications wouldn't be tolerated." "The project suffered a stream of criticism about the process and the competence of the parties, including some quite personal abuse." Perhaps the most stunning thing about the report is what it does not say, so here it is free of charge: The project failed because:- [1] Those participating lacked sufficient Internet technical and business clue to come up with something that met industry needs. [2] The choice of a traditional slow and expensive corporate IT project methodology rather than a lower cost collaborative effort by a few clueful industry players who understand what the Internet is and how it works. [3] Complete failure to recognise that name registration and DNS is a critical infrastructure system owned by ISPs, rather than a cash cow to fund the InternetNZ lunatic asylum. Next chapter SRS - don't expect anything different, above causes not yet resolved. p.s. Don't expect comment from Domainz CEO or board chair, they are both abroad on a junket.
