Whats Happened to Asiaonline (Ref: from Aardvark)
Hi.. I just saw something on Aardvark (http://www.aardvark.co.nz) about AsiaOnline. Is this true, or just a unfounded rumour? Thanks Craig Whitmore --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Long story there, sadly, we are not allowed to comment much - suffice to say that things are looking pretty grim on this side of the fence. press releases to follow etc etc.. blah blah blah, legalese crap and stuph. Pitty the job markets pretty much dried up over here :-) -- Steve. At 18:52 25/10/01 +1300, Craig Whitmore wrote:

Not looking a whole lot better over this side of the tasman. I'm glad I have a job at the moment - would not want to be looking for one at this time. Dean On Thu, Oct 25, 2001 at 11:00:00PM +1300, Steve Phillips wrote:

Hey people, We at Asia Online would like for people out there (you all know who you are) to please hang off on spamming our customers until such time as we are declared legally dead. We are not entirely out of the game as yet, and if we find that trading cannot continue at all then notification will be sent and the customer base could potentially be considered fair game. Attempts to pull our client base from us currently will result in peoples netblocks being blacklisted - basicly, we have nothing to loose here and are a little busy to respond to customers complaining about you lot out there (again, you know who you are) spamming them. for those that this e-mail does not affect or pertain to, I appologise :-) -- Steve Systems Admin, Asia Online (NZ) --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog

Commonly known as a "knee-jerk" reaction I believe. The vultures wouldn't be the losers. What is probably a better idea would be to expose the vultures in the media. I think it may be a good idea for ICONZ to email their customers to let them know that they won't be left in the lurch should things like liquidation happens. regards Lin --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
Before anyone picks on Steves 'knee jerk' too much, Ive also seen the spam message, second hand from a friend of mine whos company is a client of ICONZ.... I also know who the source is, and Id like to say that its just plain *rude*.... I dont blame Steve for his reaction *at all*. Im sure that a fair number of AOL's customers wouldnt complain about this particular blacklist, since im fairly sure most of their customers arent exactly saying 'gee thanks for this most useful advertisement'.... I know AOL have contingency plans in place should everything fall over, and I know they wouldnt just 'switch off' - their clients will have the choice, and some time to do it in. As opposed to having one particular solution thrust under their noses. Unsolicited Commercial Emailing coming from one of our group, who do our best to discourage it? *That* sucks the big one. My 2c. I agree with Rogers comment entirely. Mark. At 11:27 26/10/2001 -0600, Andy Gardner wrote:

I support their intent, if not their methods. My personal feeling is that ORBS was a pain in the ass, and didnt appear to do much other than list mail servers when it didnt need to... (having had to fight to get a couple of mail servers removed in the past). Again, my personal opinion and based only on my personal experience with it. The same with the RBL, although I have less experience with the true impact of their service. I have however had to mail servers removed from their lists, and seemed to do so without too much difficulty... I feel that services like RBL/ORBS are sometimes the only way to get server administrators to listen - but I also think that they shouldnt turn into dictatorial environments and thats a whole other kettle of fish... Im not going to disclose who did the spammage since I wasnt a victim (from either aol's or the clients pov). Its not my place. I just wanted to offer some sympathy for AOL's position, and make clear I didnt hold Steve's position against him at all.. I think his reaction is justified, at least to some degree. Have a good weekend folks. :) At 15:45 26/10/2001 -0600, Andy Gardner wrote:

Where Alan went seriously wrong with it, INHO, was the very instant that he started including servers in the database for reasons other then being open relays. The first time he listed someone in ORBS for personal reasons ("Cartoony threats against ORBS", etc) it became an arbitrary thing, and lost all credibility.
